VP, Middle Market - Underwriting Technical Manager (San Francisco)

Job DescriptionSompo is seeking a Vice President, Middle Market Underwriting Technical Manager. Location: This position will be based out of our Los Angeles, CA, Irvine, CA, or San Francisco CA office. We strive for collaboration which is why we offer a work environment where our employees thrive and develop long lasting careers.The Underwriting Technical Manager will report to the Senior Vice President, Head of Technical Managers in the US and will handle referral business for Middle Market lines of business, assist with development of underwriting strategies and guidelines, training and participate in special projects and provide subject matter expertise for the business.Our business, your impact, our opportunity:What you’ll be doing:Underwriting and Product knowledge of the Middle Market lines of business (Property, Workers’ Compensation, General Liability, Auto & Umbrella) with some knowledge of loss sensitive and deductible plansProvide product knowledge to Underwriting, Operations, IT, and other functional areas across the organization as neededHandle complex queries and referrals within delegated authoritySupport the Underwriting team to execute business strategy to include pricing, rate adequacy, terms, and conditionsProvide input supporting the development of strategic business planning activities that align with Underwriting philosophy and practicesIdentify and Lead technical training initiatives and projectsEnsure Underwriting Initiatives and Strategies support overall growth, profitability and retention of businessEducate and reinforce Underwriting strategy and guidelines to applicable team/sSubject Matter Expert and support for Underwriting team/sProvide Underwriting insight related to Underwriting toolsEstablish exposure identification, risk assessment, risk response, controls and monitoring of the standard LoBParticipate in pre-renewal, pipeline, new business pre-qualification meetingsParticipate and provides feedback for CAT modelling and Actuarial modelsWork with Regulatory Compliance to establish strategies and guidanceWork collaboratively with Underwriters and Legal when drafting manuscript endorsementsPartner with Actuarial team to review insurance products that support profitability, competitive pricing and legal complianceReview and implement legislative, regulatory, and other mandated changesConsult & coordinate with Underwriting, Actuarial, IT and Operations to elicit decision makingIdentify process/service improvement opportunities on a continuous basisCommunicate industry trends related to coverage, guidelines, and legal issues with Underwriting team/sCollaborate with various functional areas across the organization to include Legal, Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial, Audit and Regulatory ComplianceWhat you’ll bring:Minimum of 10 years of experience in the Commercial P&C IndustryProperty and/or Casualty knowledge and understanding of the industryExcellent analytical reasoning and problem-solving skillsExceptional attention to detailStrong organizational and time management skillsAbility to make decisions with limited information and see issues through to resolutionExcellent spoken and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences that include all levels of managementExperience advising and collaborating with Executive and Senior leadershipAbility to work independently and as part of a cross-functional teamStrong commitment to providing superior client serviceMust be willing to travel up to 30%Salary Range $180,000 - $245,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.At Sompo International, we recognize that the talent, skills, and commitment of our employees drive our success.
