Duties

Help

• Visually inspect required instruments for cleanliness, damage, and/or deterioration; conduct equipment testing; package surgical items individually or into trays; and document shortages.
• Determine proper sterilization procedures; load items and biological quality control tests properly; and operate and clean sterilizers.
• Initiate sterile item recall protocol when deficiencies are found in previously sterilized loads (i.e., positive spore notification or discovery of a wet load).
• Ensure appropriate climate control measures are maintained; verify expiration dates and rotate stock; and maintain stock levels in sterile supply cabinets.
• Perform daily quality assurance testing on all equipment used in the cleaning and sterilization of surgical instruments.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
• Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
• Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
• Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
• Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
• Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
• A pre-placement medical examination is required.
• Position is designated as Mission Essential. The incumbent will be required to report to work during times of contingency operations, natural disasters, extreme weather or other emergency situations.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing):

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes sterilizing medical supplies and equipment; and assembling instrument trays . This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-5).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.
