Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs a wide range of laboratory tests on patient specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. This role ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results while maintaining strict adherence to quality control procedures and regulatory standards.

Job Responsibilities

Follow the laboratory's procedures for:

• Specimen handling and processing
• Test analyses
• Reporting and maintaining records of patient test results

Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens

Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures

Review and release test results

Follow CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines

Adhere to laboratory policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable performance levels

Identify and correct problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results, or immediately notify the supervisor

Qualifications

Required:

• Education: BS in Medical Technology (preferred), BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, Associate's degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493

Preferred:

• ASCP Certification
• 1 year of clinical experience (high complexity testing)

Infection Control

Initial and ongoing training in infection control. Trainings may include, but are not limited to, bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, and biohazardous materials as applicable to the daily work environment.

• Patient Demographic Information: Name, Date of Birth, Address, Race, Marital Status, Religion

Secondary (occasional access):

• Clinical Information: Diagnosis, Reports/Medical Notes, Test Results, Problem List, Procedures, History and Physical

None (no approved access):

• Coding Information: ICD-9 Codes, Rev Codes, CPT Codes

• Financial Information/Insurance: Billing Information, Payer Name, Payer ID, Account Balances, Plan Elements Covered, Payment Information, Payment Rates
