Veterinary Extern - General Practice

Overview An externship experience at an NVA hospital gives students unique opportunities to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice and gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Every NVA hospital shares a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a dedication to exceptional service for animals and their owners. Responsibilities Gather patient histories Perform physical exams Create treatment plans Conduct diagnostics Provide dentistry services Observe and assist, or perform surgical procedures Manage patients medically Practice communication skills with medical team, support staff, and clients Duration & Eligibility Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Lakeview Animal Hospital are designed for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. Location & Staff Lakeview Animal Hospital is located in Portage, Michigan. The staff includes five veterinarians, three of whom are internship trained, and a team of technicians, technician students, receptionists, and assistants. Stipend Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel and living‑expense stipend. Qualified externs may also have housing available.
