Primary Purpose Of Organizational Unit The School of Data and Information Sciences ( SDIS ) was founded in 2026 by joining the School of Information and Library Science (1931) and the School of Data Science and Society (2022). SDIS brings together longstanding excellence in information and library science with leadership in data science, including computational and statistical methods, and societal applications. Home to a top ranked library and information science program, SDIS is recognized for strong teaching, research and service and is the home to the Carolina Health Informatics Program ( CHIP ) and the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life ( CITAP ). The School teaches and trains undergraduate and graduate students in data science, health informatics, information science and library science, as well as offers certificates for adult learners. SDIS conducts research and scholarship across the data and information life cycle, with an emphasis on human-centric, ethical and applied approaches. Committed to data, information and AI literacy for all Tar Heels, SDIS faculty are tackling our communities’ most pressing needs and our world’s most intractable challenges. Position Summary Follow a standardized course syllabus and class plan and use pre-developed instructional materials for each course. Effectively engage class members in discussions during class sessions, bringing the instructor’s unique background and expertise to the course experience by helping students apply their new knowledge to relevant, real-world problems. Provide verbal and written feedback to students as appropriate and grade student work. Support student learning by establishing and communicating regular office hours and responding to student issues and questions related to the course. Maintaining regular communications with the ILS Division Chair about students’ experiences, potential barriers, ideas for enhancement, etc. Minimum Education And Experience Requirements Earned doctorate or terminal degree in the same or closely related discipline as the course taught. In lieu of an earned terminal degree in an appropriate field as described above, instructors may be qualified by professional experience or by a combination of education and experience. A Successful Candidate Will Be Able To Demonstrate Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively manage group discussions. Strong writing skills, with experience providing feedback on written assignments. degree and experience in relevant discipline Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Significant work and/or teaching experience directly related to the course being taught.
