Human Service Worker (HSW)Goodwill Northern Michigan is seeking a Human Service Worker (HSW) to support daily operations at the Goodwill Inn, a 24 x 7 x 365 low-barrier, housing-focused emergency shelter. This role provides direct support to guests while helping maintain a safe, respectful, and dignified environment.This position pays $20/hr, and there is a $2/hr shift differential for hours worked between 10pm and 6am.Shifts Available:2nd Shift: 1:45pm - 12am3rd Shift: 9:45am - 8amPositions may include day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Flexible scheduling required based on shelter operations and coverage needs. Part-time opportunities may be available.Benefits include:Medical, dental, and vision insuranceFree virtual healthcarePaid time off and paid holidaysRetirement plan with employer contributionEmployee Assistance Program (EAP)Training and professional development opportunitiesKey Responsibilities:Support day-to-day shelter operations and guest servicesWelcome, monitor, and assist guests and visitors; manage intake and exitsProvide information, referrals, and community resource supportMaintain accurate records, including HMIS data entry and daily event logsEnsure guest sign-in accuracy and compliance with shelter expectationsMonitor facility safety, cleanliness, and emergency proceduresAnswer phones, respond to emails, and prepare basic documentationAccept and document community donations, issuing receipts as requiredCoordinate with partner agencies when emergency lodging is needed due to capacityRespond to medical or safety incidents within certification guidelines and complete required documentationAttend required trainings and staff meetingsQualifications & Expectations:Commitment to Goodwill's mission and valuesAbility to work respectfully with individuals experiencing homelessness and diverse populationsStrong attention to confidentiality, safety, and professionalismAbility to follow policies, procedures, and emergency protocolsComfortable working in a fast-paced, people-centered environmentRequirementsQualifications:High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary education in human services preferred.Experience or knowledge related to homelessness or human services preferred.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Basic computer skills; typing at least 30 wpm.Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities.Physical & Schedule Requirements:Ability to sit, stand, walk (including uneven surfaces), bend, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive movements.Ability to lift 20–30 lbs. regularly, with occasional heavier lifting.Availability for 24/7 coverage as needed.
