Laboratory Scientist/MLS/CLS/MT III - Pathology Administration - Days

Position: Med Tech 3 – Clinical Laboratory Scientist Location: 10031 Nash Road, Chesterfield, VA – VCU Health Chesterfield Pavilion. Job Overview The Med Tech3 will perform advanced laboratory analysis in specific laboratory areas and diagnostic tests on patient samples. They will assist supervisors with overseeing daily operations of specific laboratory sections and serve as the primary technical resource. Key Responsibilities Serve as the primary technical resource and advanced problem‑solver for laboratory testing, interpretation of results, and equipment performance. Perform moderate to highly complex laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses according to standard operating procedures with minimal supervision. Maintain, review, and document laboratory quality control procedures; ensure accuracy of test results. Coordinate maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment. Receive, prepare, and process biological specimens; manage transport to main lab or reference labs. Assist with daily operations oversight, inventory monitoring, and compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Provide technical guidance, training, teaching, and mentoring to staff, students, and residents; assist with competency assessments. Participate in laboratory process‑improvement activities and proficiency testing. Develop and evaluate new methodologies; write, review, and revise technical procedures. Actively prepare for CAP inspections and ensure regulatory compliance. Perform other duties as assigned and support the mission of VCUHS and the Department of Pathology. Promote teamwork and effective communication across departments; accept alternate assignments as needed. Patient Population Neonates (0‑4 weeks) Infants (1‑12 months) Pediatrics (1‑12 years) Adolescents (13‑17 years) Adults (18‑64 years) Geriatrics (65 years and older) Qualifications Education: Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program OR Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science with completion of an NAACLS‑accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR Bachelor’s Degree in Life Science/Biological Science or Chemical Science with ≥8 years of on‑the‑job training in a hospital health‑care environment performing high‑complexity testing (certifications required). Preferred: Master’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program. Licensure/Certification: Current certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP, CLS by NCA, or equivalent certifications. Required CE hours per year per certification maintenance program (minimum 15 CE hours annually; ASCP certification prior to Jan12004 exempt). Experience: Minimum 3years of clinical work experience as an MT/MLS/CLS. Experience may be specific to a specialty area such as Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology, etc. Working Conditions Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads; general office environment. Exposure to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, high noise levels, bright lights. Exposure to limited hazardous substances, body fluids, toxic/caustic chemicals, detergents, dust, fumes. Physical demands: lifting/carrying (0‑50lbs), push/pull (0‑50lbs), stoop, kneel, squat, climb, balance, bend; manual dexterity, eye/hand coordination, reach above shoulder, repetitive arm/hand movements, finger dexterity. Work position: sitting, walking, standing; shift work; environment may be noisy, require rapid response to alarms and phone calls.
