Responsibilities
  • Plan and coordinate patient care, including assessment, education, triage, and various nursing interventions.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, including physicians, to develop, implement, and assess care plans.
  • Provide compassionate care to patients throughout all stages of preventive services, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Exhibit competency and utilize comprehensive nursing expertise.
Qualifications

A graduate from an accredited nursing program is required, which may include institutions recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). A Bachelor’s Degree in nursing is preferred.

Must hold an unencumbered RN license from the State Board of Nursing where the nursing practice occurs, and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. It is essential to obtain and maintain required department-specific competencies and certifications.

Additional Job Description

The Critical Care Nurse Pathway Program is a comprehensive six-month paid program that includes classroom education, simulation labs, online training, and hands-on clinical experience in a tertiary care setting.

Experienced critical care nurses serve as primary educators, committed to providing a thorough and innovative learning experience. These program leaders collaborate with nurse managers, supervisors, unit-based educators, and fellow nursing professionals to support your professional development.

Medical/Surgical Phase

This segment of the program enables nurses to develop clinical skills through assigned clinical hours, focusing on organization, time management, prioritization, and patient care across various disease processes.

Advanced Knowledge Development

Participants will enhance their assessment and monitoring skills, pharmacology knowledge, equipment usage, medical/surgical pathology, technical skill development, admission and discharge preparations, and critical laboratory interpretation. EKG training will also be included during this phase.

Clinical Skill Development

Nurses will spend up to 8 weeks in the medical/surgical setting to gain practical skills and knowledge in caring for patients with diverse health conditions, under the supervision of a preceptor and nurse educator.

Critical Care Phase

This phase focuses on the care of critically ill patients, allowing nurses to cultivate critical care skills and knowledge of advanced issues. Additional experiences will be provided through clinical and didactic training.

Critical Care Knowledge Development

Participants will gain advanced knowledge in medication management, trauma care, in-depth pathophysiology of various conditions, organ procurement, critical care pathology, and family dynamics in critical care settings. Certifications such as ACLS and PALS will be required for relevant units, along with other professional certification requirements like TNCC and ENPC.

Critical Care Skill Development

Nurses will work approximately 36 hours per week in critical care settings to acquire hands-on skills and knowledge in caring for critically ill patients, guided by a preceptor and nurse educator.

Specialization Opportunities
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) : 18 beds for adults, focusing on open heart recovery, neurosurgery, trauma, general surgery, and continuous renal replacement therapy.
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) : 16 beds for adults, treating conditions such as myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, respiratory failure, and sepsis.
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) : 8 beds for pediatric patients, addressing trauma, medical/surgical needs, cardiac issues, and more.
  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) : Care for adult and pediatric surgical patients during recovery from various procedures.
  • Emergency Department (ED) : 20 beds for adult and pediatric patients, functioning as a Level II trauma center with an annual census of 20,000.
  • Adult Critical Care Float Pool (A-CCFP) : A role that offers diverse experiences across adult medical and surgical intensive care units, requiring strong foundational nursing skills and adaptability.
  • Children's Hospital Critical Care Float Pool (C-CCFP) : A unique opportunity for graduate nurses to enhance their skills in pediatric and neonatal critical care settings.
