Assistant Professor — Climate Science Location: Boston, MA A tenure‑track Assistant Professor in Climate Science will join the School for the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Boston beginning September 1, 2026. The candidate should be an innovative scientist with a strong Earth sciences background and broad training in the mathematical, physical, or engineering sciences, whose work advances understanding of climate processes and informs strategies for adaptation. Research interests may include climate modeling; climate impacts on Earth and environmental system functions; extremes, feedbacks, and nonlinear processes driving climate risks; climate change impacts on ecosystems, infrastructure, or communities; and quantitative or computational approaches such as data analytics or AI applied to climate challenges. Responsibilities Develop and maintain an externally funded research group in climate science that involves undergraduate and graduate students. Teach and mentor students across the Environmental Studies & Sustainability BA, Environmental Science BS, MS, and PhD programs. Encourage and develop new courses related to climate science to advance the curriculum at undergraduate and graduate levels. Serve on university committees and foster engaged scholarship with the scientific community. Collaborate with UMass Boston’s institutes (Stone Living Lab, Urban Harbors Institute, Sustainable Solutions Lab, Mass Bay National Estuary Partnership) and external partners, including local, state, and national environmental organizations. Contribute to the university’s Grand Scholarly Challenges on “Climate Equity and Coastal Urban Areas” and “Advancing a Just Society.” UMass Boston is committed to supporting junior faculty through formal mentoring, grant‑writing workshops, and opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration. Compensation & Benefits The salary range is $80,000–$99,500; exceptional candidates may receive higher compensation.
