Workers Compensation Defense Attorney

Our Staff Counsel team is excited to add a California‑licensed Workers’ Compensation Defense Attorney to our growing practice. This role offers true flexibility—remote, hybrid, or in‑office—with in‑person board appearances as needed. Candidates may also be eligible for a sign‑on bonus. Position Overview Investigates and manages Workers’ Compensation cases from inception until conclusion through dismissal, settlement, or trial. Works with adjusters and clients to resolve claims as expeditiously and efficiently as possible. This is a Full Time / Exempt role. Responsibilities Handle a caseload of Workers’ Compensation cases Meet with clients and claims professionals to resolve cases in the most cost‑effective manner Answer and develop theories and affirmative defenses Engage in routine motion practice, discovery, and research Handle routine depositions, hearings, conferences, and trials Travel to boards as required Qualifications Experience handling workers' compensation matters. Must have a valid driver's license, an acceptable MVR, and an ability to maintain confidentiality. Admitted to the bar and must be licensed to practice law in the jurisdictions where assigned. Advocacy: Has the knowledge and ability to assist, defend, or plead for another. Communication: Has the knowledge and ability to deliberately and precisely exchange thoughts and opinions with one or more persons and to effectively translate legal language and ideas into layman's terms. Organization Skills: Must be able to categorize and prioritize work and information to maximize productivity. Desired Skills and Experience Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, and daily management of e‑mail and calendar. Able to work in a team environment with attorneys, adjusters, and other claims professionals. Investigative Skills: Ability to follow up step by step on inquiries or observations; to trace or track, search or examine with care and accuracy, specifically taking evidence that may be used in reaching a legal conclusion. Legal Research: Ability to locate cases, treaties, codified laws and statutes aimed at discovery and interpretation of law and to draw a reasonable and accurate conclusion. Courtroom Skills: Appropriate courtroom behavior, attire and decorum and familiarity with the rules governing proceedings in courts of law or other legal forums. Dedication to providing the highest professional service to clients and claims professionals. Physical Demands & Work Environment Ability to use a personal computer and other standard office equipment. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to travel as necessary. Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
