We are seeking a Construction Support - Controls / Automation professional to assist the Controls / Automation Superintendent and Supervisor with the field installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of building management systems (BMS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), direct digital controls (DDC), field instrumentation, control panels, and networks supporting mission-critical data center infrastructure. This position will serve as the field eyes and ears of the controls leadership team by observing work activities, tracking progress, identifying potential safety, quality, and installation issues, and providing accurate and timely updates. Job Requirements Journeyman Electrician License. High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience in building automation, electrical or mechanical controls, instrumentation, industrial construction, commissioning, or a related technical field. Basic understanding of building management systems, PLCs, DDC systems, control panels, field instrumentation, and automated mechanical and electrical interfaces. Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, control drawings, sequences of operations, input/output point lists, and manufacturer specifications. Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, Profibus, or EtherNet/IP is preferred. General knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards, including NEC, UL, ASHRAE, ISA, NFPA, and NFPA 70E requirements. Familiarity with point-to-point verification, signal calibration, loop checks, network troubleshooting, and functional testing is preferred. Ability to follow direction, manage assigned tasks, communicate field observations, and work effectively with controls, electrical, mechanical, construction, and commissioning teams. Strong observation, communication, documentation, and problem‑solving skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital platforms used for reporting, documentation, issue tracking, and project communication. OSHA 30 certification required; First Aid/CPR, fall‑protection, NFPA 70E, controls technician, instrumentation, or other relevant trade certifications are preferred. High attention to detail with a willingness to learn and a practical, solutions‑oriented approach to field quality and system integration. Ability to work in an active construction environment and manage multiple assigned priorities in a fast‑paced setting. Other Important Requirements Pre-employment screening, including background check and substance testing may be required according to company policies. Must provide own steel-toed work boots; other PPE will be supplied. Must be able to reliably commute to the work site daily or have plans to relocate before starting work. Must be comfortable working a rotational schedule, which includes day and night shifts as well as weekend work, based on project needs. Employees working night shifts will receive a 15% premium added to their hourly rate only for hours worked during night shifts. Job Responsibilities Work under the direction of the Controls / Automation Superintendent and Supervisor to support daily field activities, inspections, testing, and project coordination. Serve as the field eyes and ears of the controls leadership team by observing work activities, documenting progress, identifying concerns, and reporting findings promptly. Conduct routine field walkdowns and provide updates regarding safety, quality, productivity, access constraints, material availability, and installation status. Observe the installation, wiring, termination, labeling, and mounting of control panels, PLCs, DDC controllers, sensors, meters, valves, actuators, and network hardware. Review control schematics, network architectures, point lists, sequences of operations, and approved submittals to understand assigned work and identify potential discrepancies. Report drawing conflicts, constructability concerns, installation errors, and field conditions to the Controls / Automation Superintendent or Supervisor for direction. Assist with verifying that required mechanical and electrical testing, flushing, inspections, and system‑readiness activities are complete before point‑to‑point checkout begins. Support point‑to‑point checks, signal calibration, loop tuning, functional testing, and troubleshooting under the direction of controls leadership, engineers, or authorized vendors. Observe cable routing, wire labeling, shielding continuity, grounding, panel cleanliness, and general workmanship; document and report nonconforming conditions. Monitor field interfaces between controls, mechanical, piping, HVAC, liquid‑cooling, electrical, fire‑protection, structural, and commissioning activities. Communicate observed integration issues, network conflicts, communication failures, or logic anomalies to the appropriate controls leader, engineer, or vendor. Support first‑work inspections, mockups, Inspection and Test Plans, quality hold points, and routine field inspections. Identify and document wiring errors, faulty hardware, communication failures, incomplete work, and punch‑list items; track assigned corrective actions and report their status. Support final commissioning, integrated systems testing, and data center black‑site testing by assisting with field verification, active‑loop troubleshooting, and real‑time data monitoring. Monitor controls material and hardware deliveries, storage conditions, handling practices, and inventory; report shortages, damage, theft, or moisture exposure. Collect and track installed quantities, manpower information, productivity data, network completion status, testing progress, and other information requested by controls leadership. Follow OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E requirements, project safety procedures, and approved work practices; immediately report unsafe conditions or activities. Participate in pre‑task planning, Job Hazard Analyses, toolbox talks, field safety observations, incident reviews, and corrective‑action follow‑up. Maintain assigned daily reports, inspection records, calibration logs, network as‑builts, redlines, punch lists, and turnover documentation. Assist controls engineers, software vendors, commissioning authorities, and operations personnel with field access, documentation, testing, troubleshooting, and training activities. Continuously develop knowledge of controls and automation systems while sharing field observations and lessons learned with the Superintendent and Supervisor. Support the implementation of approved automation sequences and control strategies that promote system reliability, energy efficiency, and high‑density cooling performance.
