Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: PACU/Pre-Op Phase II Duration: 12 weeks Shift: 10-Hour Days Hours per Shift: 40 hours per week Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Current nursing license required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS Must-Have: PACU Phase I/II experience EMR experience Charge Nurse/House Supervisor experience preferred Description: The position is for a Registered Nurse specializing in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The unit consists of Phase I PACU and Phase II combined with Preop. Nurses should be prepared to discharge patients from Phase II if needed. The nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:2 in Phase I and up to 1:3 in Phase II. The unit follows established clinical guidelines. Common cases include general surgery, orthopedic, urology, gynecology, vascular, and neurosurgery. There may be some pediatric cases, primarily ENT and lower acuity orthopedic procedures. High acuity pediatric cases are transferred to a dedicated children's hospital. Nurses will engage with equipment such as vents, CPAP, and BiPAP as required. In rare cases, ICU patients may recover in the PACU due to bed holds. RNs are expected to read cardiac strips as part of their duties. The PACU operates Monday through Friday with a schedule from 0700 to 2330. Call shifts may be required outside of regular hours, though not typically for agency staff. Floating may occur within clinical groupings based on skill set. Nurses will receive a maximum of 2-3 shifts of orientation if orienting only to the PACU, with possible additional shifts if orienting to both the PACU and Preop. The unit typically handles 30-65 cases per day, with a 20% add-on rate. Extubation is occasionally performed in the PACU; training will be provided if necessary. Experience with EMR systems is required, and candidates should provide specific details of their experience.
