Safety Specialist

PURPOSE AND ROLE

The Safety Specialist helps to maintain and effectively communicate health and safety programs, policies, and procedures for the organization for refinery and terminal work environments.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Help to maintain and communicate effective health and safety programs, policies, and procedures for the organization. Assist with health and safety audits, hazard assessments, refinery, pipeline, and facility inspections, investigations, reporting and follow‑up on incidents, address potential contractor concerns, preparation of required reports, and maintenance of compliance and safety records. Inspect or evaluate workplace environments, equipment, or practices to ensure compliance with health and safety standards and government regulations. Assist field operations in health and safety program implementation and guidance. Analyze and develop safety statistical data as requested by field operations. Order suspension of activities that pose threats to workers' health or safety by utilizing Stop Work Authority. Collect samples of liquids, dust, gases, vapors, or other potentially toxic materials for analysis. Research government safety regulations. Work with operations and maintenance daily to ensure consistent application of EHS initiatives. Provide safety oversight for daily activities for all locations. Work effectively with all levels of co‑workers, clients, and other external contacts. Abide by company policies, procedures, and technology. Function independently in a multi‑task environment, as well as part of a team. Handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately. Support compliance initiatives for internal and external audits. Identify training gaps for personnel and assist/deliver HSE training and education. Support all safety compliance programs related to OSHA, NIOSH, NFPA, etc. Produce and deliver written and verbal reports. Coordinate and participate in HSE improvement initiatives. Be flexible and may be required to work alternative schedules, weekends, or holidays. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Legally authorized to work in the U.S., in compliance with the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act. Beginner knowledge of applicable health and safety theories and concepts and a working understanding of the operating procedures and practices, as well as regulations of federal and state requirements. Intermediate knowledge of EHS laws, regulations, and standards (OSHA, PSM, root‑cause analysis methodology, NIOSH standards, API standards, etc.). Must have a valid state‑issued driver’s license and be able to travel, work evenings and weekends as required. Effectively manage time and prioritize projects to meet established deadlines. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office software. Reliable with a sense of urgency for immediate job‑related issues that arise.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is: Regularly required to walk, sit, talk, and hear. May be required to work extended hours as needed. Occasionally required to stand; use hands to grasp, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms; and may occasionally be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Pulmonary function level must be adequate for supplied breathing air certification. Specific physical requirements, including working in hot and cold environments, are an essential part of the job.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

3–5 years of work‑related experience. Associate or bachelor’s degree – Health and Safety degree or related field – preferred. CPR / First Aid / AED trained.
