Junior Accountant

Position Summary: The Junior Accountant is responsible for supporting the Bank’s day-to-day accounting functions and maintaining accurate and timely financial records. This position assists with account reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger maintenance, accounts payable, and other accounting activities to support the Bank’s financial operations. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and eager to develop their accounting knowledge in a banking environment. This position requires strong attention to accuracy, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and a willingness to learn banking accounting processes and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities: Assist with maintaining accurate and complete general ledger accounts and financial records. Prepare and post routine journal entries and accounting adjustments. Perform assigned account reconciliations and research and resolve discrepancies. Assist with accounts payable, invoice processing, and expense tracking. Assist with daily, monthly, and year-end accounting procedures and reporting. Review accounting records and transactions for accuracy and completeness. Assist with the preparation of financial reports and schedules for management. Maintain organized and accurate supporting documentation for accounting transactions. Assist with balancing and reconciling bank accounts, internal accounts, and other assigned general ledger accounts. Support the month-end and year-end closing processes. Assist with audits and provide requested documentation and information. Maintain confidentiality of financial, employee, customer, and Bank information. Follow Bank policies, procedures, internal controls, and applicable regulatory requirements. Participate in ongoing training to develop accounting and banking knowledge. Perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred. 0–2 years of accounting experience; internship or relevant coursework may be considered. Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial statements. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Banking or financial services experience is a plus, but not required. Why Join Portage Bank?
