Lead Ultrasound Technologist II

Summary This position works under the supervision of the Imaging Services Manager and is the department contact for day‑to‑day operations by staff and providers. Maintains the responsibility and accountability for the quality/efficiency of patient care and assists with staff engagement while creating a positive work environment. The Lead Technologist is supportive in directives and decisions of administration and collaborates with the manager to establish annual goals/objectives for departmental growth. This position maintains daily operations by addressing immediate issues/concerns, determining staffing needs, and scheduling patterns for appropriate department coverage. The Lead Technologist will also perform diagnostic ultrasound imaging including a variety of procedures (invasive and non‑invasive) ranging from a variety of biopsies, routine OB/GYN, vascular venous and arterial, abdomen, small body parts to intra‑cavity and color Doppler. The technologist must have strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and ability to problem‑solve while assuming responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the technologist's care. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to deal effectively with and instruct patients who may be under physical/emotional stress; ability to comprehend and follow physicians verbal orders and follow imaging protocols. The technologist will also need to be able to work productively and effectively within a complex environment of inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient circumstances by being able to multitask with changing priorities. Responsibilities (45%) Produces quality images by selecting the appropriate technical factors, equipment, and transducer settings. Verifies patient orders and reviews appropriateness for exam, obtains patient history, explains standard procedures, and addresses patient concerns to foster a sense of comfort and confidence to ensure the needs of individual patients are met. Determining if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes while using independent judgement during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings. (35%) Creating and editing staffing monthly department and on‑call schedules; adjusting them to patient volumes. Communicates essential changes to staff (ensure two‑way communication), assists with protocol changes, oversees annual reviews, orientation materials, policies, assists with billing corrections and attends necessary assigned meetings. Maintains all required documentation, logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with all The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols. (20%) The technologist is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, performing and communicating findings of diagnostic examinations, responsible for daily operations of the department, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The technologist is responsible for obtaining information such as patient identity, history, reviewing medical records for appropriateness of the exam or procedure and documentation accuracy. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations. Prepares equipment and supplies; observes sterile techniques; assists physician as needed. The ability to remain focused and flexible in a fast‑paced environment. Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the ultrasound technologist's care. Assist in the instruction and training of residents, new hire, and students. Participates in obtaining and/or maintenance of ultrasound lab accreditation. Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies. Provides excellent customer service. Delivers quality patient care, including the use of universal precautions, ensuring patient confidentiality, and practicing appropriate medical ethics. Maintains all required documentation, logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with all The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory laws, standards, and protocols. Must be able to effectively communicate orally, in writing, by telephone, with staff, physicians, and patients. Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Health customers and potential customers. Provides department specific on‑call related duties during days, evenings, and weekends as assigned between departments included in the coverage area. The flexibility to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to alternate shifts. Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings. Performs other related duties as required by authorized personnel. MyMichigan Health is a technology driven organization and employees need to demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows. Certifications and Licensures ARDMS AB – Abdominal Ultrasound Tech Required. Equivalent Experience: Abdominal Ultrasound Tech within 12 months of hire or transfer. ARDMS OBGY – OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech Required. Equivalent Experience: OB/GYN Ultrasound Tech within 12 months of hire or transfer. BLS – Basic Life Support Required. Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer. ULTRA C I – ARDMS‑RVT or CCI‑RVS Required. Equivalent Experience: ARDMS‑RVT or CCI‑RVS within 18 months of hire or transfer. Required Education Education: Associates Degree. Equivalent Experience: Preferred Bachelor of Science degree and one‑year full‑time work experience in a hospital setting. Other Information EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND SKILLS: Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner in person and by phone. Three years' work experience in a hospital setting is preferred. One year full‑time work experience preferred. Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or equivalent clinical diagnostic setting experience including hospital, clinical, or private practice is required. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake. Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis. Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs., frequently (34‑66% of the workday) 10 lbs and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls. #J-18808-Ljbffr
