Senior Accountant

Senior Accountant Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization, is seeking a Senior Accountant to support day-to-day accounting operations and help maintain the integrity of financial reporting. Location: San Francisco, CA. This position follows a hybrid work schedule, 3 days/week in the office. Job Description: This is a highly visible, hands-on role that will contribute to financial accuracy, process improvement, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working in a collaborative environment with evolving processes. Responsibilities: Manage general ledger and sub-ledger activity, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and restricted funding activity Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data in accordance with applicable accounting standards Prepare and review monthly account reconciliations and balance sheet schedules Oversee invoicing, collections, and aging analysis to ensure timely receipt of funds Monitor restricted funding and contract-related expenditures for compliance with budget and terms Prepare cash flow reporting and support cash forecasting activities Review journal entries, account balances, and financial transactions for accuracy Maintain proper documentation, record retention, and audit-ready support schedules Support fixed asset tracking and reconciliation processes Assist with audits, filings, and collaboration with external stakeholders Contribute to process improvements, system enhancements, and accounting best practices Support KPI tracking and reporting for management Participate in ad hoc accounting projects and operational initiatives Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field 3+ years of progressive accounting experience with general ledger and financial reporting exposure Nonprofit experience required Grants + donations experience required Heavy operational accounting / full-cycle accounting Heavy month-end close ownership Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting standards Proficiency in Excel and experience working with accounting systems Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills High attention to detail and the ability to identify discrepancies Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively Experience in nonprofit accounting or working with restricted funding preferred Compensation: Determining compensation for this role (and others) at Vaco by Highspring depends upon a wide array of factors, including but not limited to: The individual’s skill sets, experience, and training; Licensure and certifications; Office location and other geographic considerations; Other business and organizational needs.
