Urban N. Zink Contractor, Inc., an established earthwork and site-development contractor serving Maryland, is seeking an experienced Class A CDL Lowboy Driver to transport large construction equipment between our equipment yard and active project sites.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience loading, securing, transporting, and unloading heavy earthmoving equipment. This position requires sound judgment, dependable communication, and a strong commitment to safety.
Compensation and Benefits
- $32.00$36.00 per hour, based on relevant lowboy, heavy-haul, and construction-equipment experience
- Overtime paid for hours worked over 40 per week
- Weekly pay
- Medical insurance eligibility following completion of 60 days of employment, effective in accordance with the applicable plan terms
- UNZ pays a major portion of the employee-only medical insurance premium
- Safe Harbor 401(k)/profit-sharing plan with a company contribution equal to 3% of eligible compensation after one year, regardless of whether the employee contributes
- Paid time off under UNZs calendar-year PTO policy:
- Five paid days annually for eligible employees
- Thirteen paid days annually after three full years of employment, beginning the following January 1
- Initial-year PTO is determined by the employees hire date and applicable company policy
- Paid company holidays:
- New Years Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
- Up to three paid bereavement days for the death of an immediate family member
- Paid jury-duty leave for eligible full-time employees
- Applicable prevailing-wage rates when required by the assigned project
All compensation and benefits are subject to eligibility requirements and the terms of the applicable company plans and policies.
Primary Responsibilities
- Operate a tractor and lowboy trailer to transport heavy construction equipment.
- Safely load, position, secure, transport, and unload equipment.
- Transport excavators, bulldozers, loaders, rollers, skid steers, and other company-owned equipment.
- Coordinate equipment moves with the Director of Field Operations, general superintendents, site superintendents, and other authorized company personnel.
- Confirm that each equipment move has been properly scheduled and authorized before entering a project site.
- Verify load weights, dimensions, heights, securement, route restrictions, and permitting requirements before transport.
- Properly use chains, binders, straps, flags, signs, and other required securement equipment.
- Complete all required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Follow all DOT, FMCSA, state, project, and company safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate driver logs, inspection reports, delivery documentation, and other required records.
- Identify and immediately report maintenance or safety concerns involving the truck, trailer, or transported equipment.
- Assist with the safe movement and staging of equipment at active construction sites.
- Maintain the assigned truck and trailer in a clean, safe, and professional condition.
- Protect company and customer property when entering, working within, and leaving project sites.
- Confirm that gates, locks, access points, and site-security measures are properly restored before leaving a site.
- Immediately report any mud, debris, property damage, security concern, or unsafe condition resulting from an equipment move.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License.
- Current DOT medical card.
- Acceptable motor vehicle record and ability to meet company insurance requirements.
- Demonstrated lowboy, heavy-haul, or construction-equipment transportation experience.
- Ability to safely operate construction equipment for loading and unloading.
- Knowledge of DOT cargo-securement requirements for heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of overweight and oversize-load requirements, permits, route restrictions, bridge clearances, and equipment heights.
- Ability to pass required pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion, and random drug and alcohol testing.
- Dependable attendance and the ability to report to work on time.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, equipment operators, project teams, customers, and the public.
- Ability to work safely and independently while keeping authorized equipment moves on schedule.
- Willingness to follow all established scheduling, site-access, and notification procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience transporting large excavators, bulldozers, loaders, rollers, and other earthmoving equipment.
- Experience obtaining or working under overweight and oversize-load permits.
- Class A CDL without air-brake or manual-transmission restrictions.
- Familiarity with Maryland roads, construction sites, and transportation requirements.
- Basic knowledge of truck and trailer inspection, maintenance, and repair requirements.
- Experience working for an earthwork, excavation, site-development, or heavy-civil construction company.
Physical and Scheduling Requirements
- Ability to climb safely onto trucks, trailers, and construction equipment.
- Ability to lift, carry, and properly handle chains, binders, ramps, and other securement equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather, traffic, and jobsite conditions.
- Ability to work early mornings, extended hours, and occasional evenings or weekends when equipment moves are properly scheduled and authorized.
- Local and regional travel between the company yard and project sites throughout Maryland is required.
- Saturday work may be required during peak construction periods or when project needs require it.
