Job Description: Location: Carrollton, Texas Reports to: Engineering Manager Department: Engineering Hiring Range: $32.21 - $36.05 per hour Supporting Product Testing, Quality, and Reliability Bourns is seeking a hands-on and adaptable Lab Technician, Protection to support product testing, quality evaluation, and failure analysis within the Engineering organization. This role involves conducting a wide range of routine and specialized tests to evaluate product performance, quality, and failure modes. The position requires working with high-voltage and high-current equipment, where strong safety awareness is essential. The successful candidate will support testing activities by designing and fabricating custom test fixtures and equipment, compiling and analyzing test data, preparing detailed reports, sketches, and technical drawings, and assisting with other duties as project and operational needs evolve. This position requires adaptability, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to both technical and operational tasks. Performing Product Testing and Failure Analysis Perform routine and custom-designed product tests related to performance, quality, and failure analysis. Operate high-voltage and high-current equipment safely and effectively. Fabricate test fixtures and equipment as needed to support testing activities. Collect, analyze, and interpret test data; prepare detailed technical reports, sketches, and drawings. Schedule and perform tests on prototypes, new products, and existing product lines to determine conformance to Engineering/Datasheet specifications. Prepare test results and statistical summaries for publication to Engineers, Marketing, and internal customers. Make recommendations for test procedure changes or modifications to ensure reliable test methods. Originate failure reports on non-conforming products and recommend further testing and analysis. Supporting Engineering and Troubleshooting Consult with and advise engineers, product designers, and other personnel regarding product testing and troubleshooting. Perform detailed failure analysis on customer returns, inspection failures, defective components, or new products using physical, electrical, chemical, thermal, x-ray, or disassembly methods where available. Maintain records of tasks performed and results obtained. Write limited computer programs to collect and reproduce test data. Assist and/or train other personnel in the division. Supporting Team and Operational Needs Perform additional duties as assigned based on project or departmental needs. Assist with tasks outside of core responsibilities to support the daily operational flow of the company. Communication and Computer Skills Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately. The Background You’ll Need Education High school diploma plus two years of college or technical school training in the electronics field. Experience Knowledge of electronic components and test equipment, along with at least two years of experience as an Electronic or Test Technician with equipment troubleshooting and maintenance experience. Other Skills Ability to solve mathematical problems. Ability to read and create technical drawings, schematics, and sketches for fixtures, tooling, and specialized equipment. Ability to troubleshoot simple electronic circuits. Ability to operate test equipment such as power supplies, digital multimeters, soldering tools, and assorted hand tools. Solid understanding and practical application of Ohm’s Law in electrical testing and analysis. Ability to complete assignments efficiently and with minimal supervision. Equipment and Test Tools The position operates various electronic, mechanical, and environmental test equipment, including: Digital multimeter Thermal imaging camera Other in-house electronic and computerized test equipment Physical Requirements Frequent lifting of material and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds is required. Bending, stooping, reaching, and walking are also required.
