Recreation Assistant (18+)– After School Program 2026/2027

The Recreation Assistant supports the After School Program by helping facilitate engaging, safe, and inclusive activities for youth. This role requires strong leadership , accountability, and a genuine passion for working with children in structured group environments.

• Must be age 18 or older.
• CPR/AED/First Aid certified (or ability to obtain within 2 weeks of hire).
• Confirmed experience working with youth in group settings (e.g., camps, classrooms, recreation programs). Babysitting alone does not meet this requirement.
• Strong leadership skills and ability to take initiative.
• Ability to remain calm and think critically in stressful situations.
• Must pass a background check through the St. Helens School District.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervise and engage participants in after-school recreational activities.
• Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for youth participants.
• Support the Parks and Recreation Manager in overseeing youth activities and ensuring proper supervision and engagement.
• Assist with the preparation, setup, organization, and cleanup of crafts, activities, games, equipment, and program areas utilized throughout the program.
• Monitor, maintain, and organize program equipment, supplies, and facility spaces.
• Enforce program rules and safety standards while promoting positive behavior.
• Address participant concerns and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
• Assist with the development of class schedules and implementation of activities and programs.
• Collaborate with the Recreation team to deliver diverse, inclusive, and health-focused programming.
• Coordinate recreational programming and facility usage with schools, community partners, businesses, and outside agencies.
• Work collaboratively with the St. Helens School District and community organizations utilizing recreation facilities.
• Assist with public outreach efforts, including preparing and distributing flyers, brochures, recreation catalogs, promotional materials, and public relations materials.
• Respond to public inquiries and help promote Parks and Recreation programs and services.
• Provide clerical support, including program registration, answering phones, and maintaining communication with other divisions and agencies.
• Actively participate in staff meetings, trainings, and team planning activities.
• Assist with site operations, including opening and closing facilities as assigned.
• Support participants, families, and staff by providing excellent customer service.
• Obtain and maintain required certifications, including First Aid/CPR, as directed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Schedule
Part-Time: 12 hours a week.
Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday 2pm – 5:15pm; Wednesday 12:30pm – 5:15 pm
Start August 24th through end of the school year June 24, 2027
Must be available to work occasional evenings or weekends for family engagement activities, typically held once per quarter
Rate of Pay
$15.45 per hour
