Phlebotomist I

Job Overview:

The main function of the phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities:

Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, and update patient information.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Properly explain in a clear and courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.
Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all physician orders.
Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens for transport.
Store specimen samples according to required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocol procedures required for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, and attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Qualifications:

Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in applicable states.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED with 0-2 years of experience.
