This Senior Business Systems Engineer, AI Capability Lead will provide independent technology leadership, solution shaping, and technical decision support for Medical Affairs and Health Impact (MHI) and related business areas, serving as the primary MHI Business Technology Solutions (BTS) technology point of coordination for AI-related capabilities and initiatives. This role will translate business problems and opportunities into technology capabilities, solution options, feasibility considerations, and scalable approaches that leverage AbbVie enterprise platforms, standards, and reusable services. 

This role will own and maintain the integrated MHI AI technology roadmap as a technology planning artifact, connecting active and planned AI initiatives to longer-term MHI capabilities and broader AbbVie and IR AI strategies in partnership with BRMs, architects, platform teams, engineering teams, and IR development organizations. 

Responsibilities: 

• Engage MHI business stakeholders, BRMs, BTS colleagues, and technical teams to understand business drivers, system needs, and AI opportunities. 
• Identify process improvements, reuse opportunities, and key technology, data, architecture, security, privacy, compliance, and delivery risks. 
• Own and maintain the integrated MHI AI technology roadmap as a planning artifact. Consolidate visibility across planned and active MHI AI initiatives; identify dependencies, overlaps, gaps, reuse opportunities, architectural considerations, and sequencing implications; connect individual initiatives to longer-term MHI capabilities; and align the roadmap with BRM-led priorities and broader AbbVie and IR AI strategies, platforms, and roadmaps. 
• Shape scalable AI-enabled solutions by translating business problems and opportunities into technology options, requirements, feasibility considerations, and roadmap recommendations. Evaluate build, buy, reuse, and enterprise platform options in collaboration with architects, platform owners, security, privacy, compliance, and delivery teams. 
• Ensure appropriate alignment with AbbVie enterprise architecture frameworks, approved AI platforms and solution patterns, engineering and development standards, data and integration standards, security and privacy requirements, responsible AI expectations, compliance requirements, and reusable services. Promote enterprise adoption to avoid unnecessary local, isolated, or duplicative solutions. 
• Serve as a primary MHI BTS interface with internal IR development teams, enterprise architects, platform teams, engineering teams, and technical SMEs for AI-related work. Engage technical teams early during opportunity and solution shaping; surfaces technical dependencies; supports solution alignment; and escalates significant architecture, technology, data, responsible AI, security, privacy, compliance, or delivery risks through appropriate governance and delivery channels. 
• Provide technology insight and practical guidance to MHI stakeholders and BTS colleagues regarding where AI is appropriate, what options exist, and how proposed approaches should align with AbbVie platforms, standards, and scalable enterprise services. Monitor relevant emerging AI technologies and translate them into practical MHI opportunities where applicable. 
• Has defined authority and responsibility for technology analysis, recommendation quality, roadmap inputs, feasibility assessments, and risk visibility. Help define technology objectives with architects, platform owners, and delivery teams; recommend solution direction; inform technical and architectural decisions; constructively question proposed approaches when appropriate; and is accountable for the accuracy and quality of information used to support business justification, prioritization, and delivery decisions. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree with 8 years’ experience; OR Master's Degree with 7 years’ experience; OR PhD with 3 years’ experience.
• Respective years of relevant experience in either business systems engineering, technology capability leadership, enterprise platforms, solution delivery, or related information technology roles. 
• Experience in exercising significant latitude and independent judgment in solution shaping, technical problem solving, feasibility assessment, risk identification, and recommendation of scalable technology approaches. 
• Work checked through consultation, alignment, and agreement with BRMs, business stakeholders, architects, platform owners, delivery teams, and other senior technical stakeholders rather than formal review by superiors. 
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex business problems into technology capabilities, solution options, architecture considerations, functional requirements, and delivery approaches while preserving the appropriate boundary between BRM business relationship accountability and BSE technology capability leadership. 
• Working knowledge of generative AI, large language models, AI agents and agentic workflows, machine learning concepts, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt engineering, model evaluation, AI-enabled workflow automation, data requirements and data readiness for AI, APIs, enterprise integration, responsible AI, AI security, privacy, compliance, and enterprise AI platforms and reusable AI services, sufficient to evaluate solution fit, engage technical experts, and understand implementation implications. 
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with enterprise architects, development teams, platform teams, engineering teams, security, privacy, data, and compliance SMEs to evaluate solution options, constructively question recommendations when appropriate, understand architectural implications, and translate between business and technical stakeholders. 
• Ability to develop and maintain a technology roadmap, identify dependencies and capability gaps, promote enterprise reuse and scalability, and connect active initiatives to longer-term business technology capabilities without requiring deep model development, AI engineering, production software engineering, or data science expertise.

• The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future. ​
