JOB SUMMARY
The Busser / Food Runner at the Army and Navy Club supports the Food & Beverage team in delivering the highest quality of service to our Members and Guests in both the Dining Room and the Lounge, as assigned. This individual is responsible for maintaining clean, organized, and fully stocked dining areas, promptly and accurately running food from the kitchen to Members and Guests, and assisting servers and bartenders with table maintenance so that service flows smoothly and efficiently. Our support staff must be Member-focused, attentive, and quick on their feet, embodying the Club's shared spirit of "Serve Those Who Serve" in every interaction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES
• Represent the Army and Navy Club as a professional "goodwill ambassador" at all times, embodying the Club's shared spirit of "Serve Those Who Serve"
• Set up and break down assigned side stations, side work, and bus stations in both the Dining Room and the Lounge as scheduled
• Greet Members and Guests warmly when passing through the dining room or Lounge, and assist with seating as needed
• Promptly deliver food from the kitchen to the correct table, confirming orders and seat positions before running food
• Verify that each dish is accurate, complete, and presented properly before it leaves the kitchen
• Clear and reset tables promptly and discreetly between courses and after Members and Guests depart
• Replenish water, bread, condiments, and other table items throughout service
• Always maintain a full awareness of the floor, communicating with servers, bartenders, and kitchen staff to anticipate needs
• Polish silverware, fold napkins, and prepare service supplies for both the Dining Room
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of tables, chairs, service stations, and floors throughout the shift
• Attend all training sessions related to food, beverage, and service standards
• Report Member or Guest complaints or concerns to a supervisor immediately
• Perform closing and clean-up duties as assigned by management, including resetting rooms for the next service period
• Attend and participate in pre-meal briefings as requested by the Dining Room Captain, Manager on Duty, or Food & Beverage Director
• Adhere to all inventory control procedures for supplies, linens, and equipment
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance for scheduled part-time shifts; position may require nights, weekends, and holidays. Notify supervisor of scheduling requests at least one week in advance
• Perform other duties as assigned; responsibilities may evolve based on operational needs
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
• Prior food service, busser, food runner, or back-of-house experience preferred, but not required; on-the-job training provided
• High school diploma or GED preferred; must be able to read, write, and speak English clearly enough to communicate with the team and follow tickets
• Basic familiarity with dining room and bar setup, or willingness to learn, required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Ability to work quickly and accurately in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure
• Strong teamwork and communication skills; ability to work closely with servers, bartenders, and kitchen staff
• Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining high service and appearance standards
• Ability to carry multiple plates and trays safely and efficiently
• Ability to work flexible, part-time hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
• Willingness to move between the Dining Room and the Lounge as staffing needs require
Certifications & Compliance
• DC Food Handler's certification required (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire)
• CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications preferred, or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire
