Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week)(if eligible, 40 hours per week) Invention Education Mentor for the Department of Educational Pathways at Oregon State University (OSU). Invention Education Mentors (hereafter referred to as "Mentors") play a pivotal role in executing a variety of program-related activities, including but not limited to leading invention and other STEM lessons, student check-ins, parent communication, team building, and playing games. A detailed work schedule will be provided to ensure clarity on the sessions you will lead and the expected hours. iINVENT Summer Camps are mobile camps; therefore, Mentors will lead invention education programs across Oregon. This role offers not just valuable job experience and professional growth, but also the unique chance to explore the scenic beauty of the Beaver State. Summer camps will take place both at Oregon State University and away from OSU in rural communities. When assigned, Mentors are expected to work 40 hours per week while camps are in session. On weeks where the camp is being hosted relatively close to OSU, Mentors will be provided a van to commute to and from camp daily. During weeks where the camp is held further away, Mentors will be provided a van, lodging, and meal stipends. When overnight travel is required, Mentors are expected to leave the Sunday before camps start, stay overnight in shared accommodations, and return to OSU Friday after camp. As a Mentor, you will take part in a comprehensive training beginning in the spring term (part-time and online) leading up to the camps that kick off in early summer (full-time). One full week of in-person training is required during the first week of summer (June 15-18, 2026). Transferable Skill Development OSU is committed to ensuring students are prepared for success after graduation through intentional skill development as student employees. The competencies students develop while working at OSU are defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as the essential skills employers seek in their hires. In this position, students learn and build vital career-readiness skills in the primary areas below:
Communication, Teamwork, Leadership, and Professionalism. Position Duties
All Invention Education Mentors must complete online training and have full attendance at the in-person training the week of June 15-18, 2026. During Summer Camps, Mentors will attend to program related duties, such as preparing curriculum, materials, and facilitating youth engagement in programing. Employment Eligibility Requirements. Mentors should be self-directed, motivated, and able to adapt to changing circumstances that arise in informal education settings. Must be flexible to do a variety of tasks that may arise. We are wanting someone who is utilizing summer as their term "off" (less than 6 credits) so that they can work 40 hours per week during camp.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years. This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq. - Express a welcoming presence for all youth
- Maintain a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for all during the program
- Work with 2-3 other OSU students as a team to lead lessons
- Handle on-site logistical aspects of camp (check-in, snack time, check-out, etc.)
- Handle on-site parent communication related to needs of their child and/or behavior issues
- Communicate concerns and updates regularly with OSU Program staff
- Inventory supply kits and restock between camps

- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

- Experience working with youth is strongly desired, e.g. summer camp setting, field instructor,
- lead instructor, site-coordinator, camp counselor, or in any informal educator capacity.
- Experience managing youth in large and small groups.
- Experience engaging with youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Students with a demonstrated history of effectively delivering science, technology, engineering, and math related content with middle school and/or high school students and knowledge of out-of-school time learning will be given preference.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills are a plus.
