Transportation Assistant

PRIMARY PURPOSE :

The Transportation Assistant assists in the safe and pleasant transportation of children enrolled in the School District.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS :

• Reports to the Transportation Manager

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

The employee will be required to perform any other position-related duties requested by the Transportation Manager and/or Director of Transportation.

• Ensures the safety and well-being of children being transported to and from the program and on field trips on vehicles used by the program, including but not limited to:
• • Helping children board the bus safely, including helping teachers prepare for departure (putting on coats and assuring that each child has his/her own belongings);
  • Assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle;
  • Helping children safely get off the bus and into the custody (only) of those individuals authorized to receive them; and
  • Retrieving any fallen objects during the bus ride;
• Follow and ensures mandated child restraint devise procedures (if needed), ensuring children are properly positioned and restrained.
• Assure that no child is ever left unsupervised on a bus
• Engage in activity that is;
• Safe and appropriate for a moving vehicle; and
• Consistent with developmentally appropriate practices to make the trip pleasant and comfortable
• In the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of children and adults passengers (following the Bus Evacuation Plan) and assists in assuring that all passengers are transported to the nearest hospital or to their private physician, as per Medical/Accident Emergency Plan
• Attend all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and trainings, as requested
• Assist in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition
• Assure that no child is ever left unsupervised on a van
• Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designee

The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary. • Excellent communication skills required
• The employee in this position could be required as part of his or her duties to engage in activities that can be charged to a Medical Assistance or other state or federal healthcare program.
• Clearance as provider under such programs by both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the federal government is therefore an essential qualification for this position

• Qualified candidate will be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and to talk and hear; Sit and occasionally be required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and crouch
• Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
• Have the ability to lift and/or move up to 55 pounds
• Must be able to climb into the school bus, walk, bend, kneel and squat frequently
• Maintain stamina during the workday
• Have specific vision abilities; to include close vision and the ability to adjust focus
• Risk involved with travel on main highways, side streets and roads during transportation of children
• Usual lifting activity: Medium, lifting up to 50 lbs. maximum and carrying objects up to 25 lbs
• Requires occasional bending, reaching, standing, and walking (these activities are an essential part of the job at random intervals)
• Requires frequent speaking (these activities are a usual and customary part of the job.)
• Requires constant hearing, and seeing (these activities are continually occurring as part of the job)

• Current Act 34, Act 114 and Act 151 clearances
• School Health Form (including physical and TB test)
• PDE Form 6004 and Act 168 disclosure forms
