The primary purpose of advising in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (CHESS) is to provide students with the support needed to successfully navigate their academic experience from their first enrollment to graduation for students. Using a developmental and/or appreciative model approach, academic advisors work with students so that students develop the knowledge, skills and personal accountability needed to explore their academic and co-curricular options, evaluate and track their own progress toward graduation, access support and enrichment services, and understand and follow university policies and timelines. Advising services encompass a range of interactions with students from individual and small group meetings (virtual and in-person) to email and phone calls, among others. Services for the entire college may include: advising for New Student Orientation and serving as the first point of contact for new students and existing students transitioning to majors inside or outside of the college. This position is committed to engaging students in personal development and self-assessment, teaching students how to effectively manage their academic success, and supporting students through exploration of their major and career development plans. Students are expected to develop plans consistent with their interests, abilities, and aspirations and to utilize available resources to achieve their long-term goals. This individual ensures that students have access to accurate and relevant information so that they can take initiative and responsibility for their success. This individual upholds the expectations and standards of advising at Charlotte professionally and respectfully reflects an appreciation for students from all backgrounds. Summary of Position Responsibilities
Individual Assistance: The Academic Advisor will assume advising responsibilities for any assigned student for whom the role is placed at UNC Charlotte. This individual will also be responsible for supporting students declaring or expressing interest in the assigned College/School. The advisor must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office while also building strong alliances with faculty and other campus partners that support the holistic development of students. The advisor must commit to student success and the ability to listening and analyze academic needs. Additional Assistance : The Academic Advisor will also be engaged in other activities that support the orientation, onboarding, and consistent communication with UNC Charlotte students. These activities might include teaching and seminar facilitation, event participation, coordinated messaging, and other duties as assigned.
- Learn and remain current on all relevant curricula for programs assigned and for curricular areas more broadly beneficial to the students' degree programs.
- Assist students in developing the knowledge and skills needed to effectively explore, establish, and pursue their academic, career, and life goals.
- Assist students in developing plans for making progress and charting their own progress toward those goals.
- Understand and effectively develop students' knowledge of university academic policies, regulations, guidelines, and deadlines, and the curriculum requirements for the specific program(s) of study of the students being advised.
- Optimize academic advising technology (Connect (EAB), DegreeWorks, Slate, ReportCentral, Banner, etc.) to engage students in ensuring degree program persistence and timely graduation.
- Master's degree completed.
- Candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking, and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner.
- Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) is necessary.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality.
- A working knowledge of Banner, EAB, Slate, Degree Works, and/or Salesforce is a plus.
- Any academic advising experience in higher education.
