Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation serves as a key leadership team member responsible for supporting the Director in the planning, coordination, operation, and maintenance of all parks and recreation facilities, programs, and services. This is a hands-on supervisory position requiring active involvement in daily operations while providing leadership and direction to department staff. The Assistant Director works closely with employees, community members, volunteers, and user groups to ensure high-quality recreational opportunities and facilities for the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist the Director with the overall management and operation of the Parks & Recreation Department.
• Provide direct supervision, training, scheduling, and evaluation of department personnel.
• Coordinate and oversee recreational programs, leagues, tournaments, special events, and community activities.
• Assist with staffing and operational planning for parks, swimming pool, golf course, gymnasium, athletic fields, and concession facilities.
• Monitor facility usage schedules and coordinate reservations and programming needs.
• Respond to public inquiries, concerns, and requests in a professional and customer-focused manner.
• Assist with budget implementation, purchasing, inventory management, and record keeping.
• Ensure facilities and programs comply with established safety policies and procedures.
• Perform routine maintenance and operational duties as needed.
• Work collaboratively with community organizations, schools, sports associations, and local stakeholders.
• Serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of parks and recreation operations, programming, and facility management.
• Knowledge of sports leagues, tournaments, scheduling, and event coordination.
• Strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate and work with staff, elected officials, volunteers, and the general public.
• Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
• Working knowledge of parks, swimming pools, golf course operations, gymnasiums, athletic fields, and concession stands.
• Proficiency in basic computer applications and record-keeping systems.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Sports Management, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
• Experience in parks and recreation, facility management, sports administration, or a related field preferred.
• Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as required.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
