Detailer Trainee

The Detailer Trainee is an entry-level position that provides hands-on training in structural steel detailing. This role focuses on learning to read and interpret design documents and understanding industry specifications and detailing software utilization. This role teaches how to turn engineering plans into a virtual structure and 2D drawings that will guide the fabrication and erection process. The goal of this role is to successfully complete the Detailer Training Program and transition into a Detailer.

Essential Job Functions

Detailer Training Program:

1. Learn to read and comprehend design documents and the specifications of governing bodies (AISC, AWS, ASTM, etc…).
2. Learn various aspects of structural steel detailing process and successfully complete the program.
3. Undergo extensive training on computer software programs used by the Department.
4. Develop the ability to work independently, cultivate confidence in decision-making, and work with a sense of urgency.
5. Develop a firm understanding of all aspects of the Detailing Standards Manual and other Detailing Department guidelines.
6. Recognize and communicate errors, discrepancies, and omissions of design information to the Detailing Supervisor.
7. Understand and implement project connection designs provided within the design documents or by the Engineering Department.

General Detailer Trainee Job Functions:

1. Review architectural and structural drawings to understand project requirements.
2. Create 2D and 3D shop drawings using detailing software under the guidance of a supervisor.
3. Apply project-specific steel fabrication standards and detailing guidelines to your work.
4. Ensure drawings meet quality control standards before submission.
5. Learn to calculate dimensions, quantities, and material specifications from design documents.
6. Assist with preparing and organizing drawing packages for fabrication and erection teams.
7. Maintain organized digital project files and follow proper version control practices.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required :

• Experience with CAD and/or 3D modeling platforms.

• Experience with geometry mathematics.

• Familiarity with layout and dimensioning techniques.

• Competency with MS applications and common computer skills.

• Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

• Some experience in the construction or engineering industry through work, possibly internships or employment.
• Desire to learn structural steel fabrication and erection processes.
• Formal drafting training or prior drafting experience.
