Emergency Room Registered Nurse

This position is for an Emergency Room unit. The emergency room has 56 beds, with hall beds that can increase capacity to 60-70. There is a separate fast track area with 6 beds. A separate triage area is available with 5 beds, and travelers may be assigned to triage after passing a test. There are 18 beds designated for holding inpatients awaiting bed placement. Emergency Room RNs manage their own ER holds. Separate psychiatric and seclusion rooms are available. In-house security is present. The average number of patients per day is approximately 170-200. The staff-to-patient ratio is 1:3 for regular cases and can be 1:4 for low acuity cases. Common diagnoses and types of patients include cardiac issues, stroke, sepsis, DKA, altered mental status, respiratory issues, abdominal pain, and mental health concerns. Emergency Department physicians and mid-levels are on site. Charge nurses and house supervisors are available for support. Nurse aides, paramedics, and ED techs provide support as necessary. Respiratory therapists manage respiratory equipment and perform necessary tests. Monitor techs are present, and RNs can read strip reports. Radiology services are available adjacent to the emergency department. Nurse or ED tech primarily performs blood draws with lab assistance as needed. Shifts for travelers are based on departmental needs and existing patterns. There is a weekend requirement of every other weekend. All holidays in November and December are mandatory unless it does not conflict with unit demands. There is no call or standby requirement for this position. Professional colors are required for dress code. Unit-specific orientation includes compliance training, policies, education, and departmental orientation. Non-requested time off will not be considered during the first full week of assignment. The facility can cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment if necessary. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required for this position.
