Nurse Transplantation Coordinator - Stem Cell Transplantation Center

UT MD Anderson's Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Center is one of the largest facilities in the world for stem cell transplants. During stem cell transplants, unhealthy bone marrow is replaced by healthy stem cells. These stem cells then develop into healthy marrow that produces different types of blood cells.

We perform more than 850 procedures for adults and children each year, more than any other center in the nation. As part of one the nation's top cancer centers, we provide comprehensive stem cell transplant services. These include a clinic dedicated to monitoring and managing graft versus host disease, a condition that can arise from stem cell transplantation; and a matched unrelated donor program, which has earned us recognition as a specialized center for stem cell transplants by the National Marrow Donor Program.

We also maintain our own cell processing laboratory for preparing safe and effective tissues for transplantation and perform more than 1,000 collections each year through our apheresis and stem cell collection unit.

Shift: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday on-site a minimum of 3 days a week after training, can change based on clinic needs. Orientation/training is 100% onsite.

Salary: $101,000 minimum, $126,500 midpoint, $152,000 maximum

The ideal candidate must have at least two years of oncology nursing experience with a BSN degree. Hematology experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient setting is a plus. Must have strong time management skills and the ability to multitask.

Summary
The Nurse Transplantation Coordinator directs the coordination of care for Stem Cell Transplantation patients. Responsible for the coordination of all aspects of patient care for this population of patients including, education, multidisciplinary referrals, data tracking, diagnostics, determining protocol eligibility, treatment orders, consents, and other activities essential to the overall care of the patient.

Coordination of Care - Demonstrates expert knowledge of SCT process and complex pre-transplant care including HLA typing. Directs plan of care with the patient and the multidisciplinary team. Coordinates and conducts patient and family education utilizing BMT Patient Education Manual and Patient Education online. Assesses needs for multidisciplinary support and organize consults with other areas in a timely and efficient manner. Directs all pre-admission activities to include donor activities, treatment orders, consents, education, tours, TBI, documentation and pre-admit requisitions to ensure a smooth, seamless transition for patients and family members to the inpatient setting. Organizes all diagnostics needed pre-transplant. Responsible for scheduling admissions and preparing the appropriate paperwork to ensure a clear and concise admission process. Communicates with all members of the multidisciplinary team, patients, caregivers and donors.

Facilitates patient tracking meeting with multidisciplinary team to review and update patient's progress through the pre-transplant process to assure team is aware of patient's and team's needs and progress of patient in the pre-transplant phase. Utilizes and updates BMTEZ database communication tool.

Collaborates with the unrelated coordinator team to ensure excellent patient care without duplication of effort for the unrelated transplant patient. Reviews HLA typing results for related patients with the unrelated team. Assures that the transition of care from outpatient to inpatient is seamless.

Outreach - Effectively and efficiently communicates with referring physicians. Interfaces with referring physician and local institution regarding staging, treatment plans and medications.

Data Management - Collaborates with research nurses regarding scheduling of studies, status of protocols, education of specific protocols and assembling necessary data (e.g., apheresis). Collaborates with research RNs to assure eligibility for protocols and maintains working knowledge of all Transplant related protocols.

Process Improvement - Evaluates the methods for coordinating assignments to physician teams. Responsible for participating on process improvement meetings as assigned to address SCT operations. Accountable to actively participate in task forces and meetings dedicated to improving communication and SCT processes. Responsible for reviewing SCT policy and procedures and for providing feedback regarding SCT policy and procedures that are related to the pre-transplant phase. Accountable for adhering to SCT process, policy and procedures and other regulatory agencies, i.e., FACT.

Education
Required: Associate's degree in nursing.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Experience
Required: Two years of oncology clinical nursing.
Preferred: Two years of oncology clinical nursing; hematology experience in an outpatient or inpatient setting is a plus.

License and Certification
Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN), BLS - Basic Life Support or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification
Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
