As a Meter Reader Technician you safely and accurately record customer gas meter readings, inspect meters for damage or leaks, and report equipment issues. Meter Reader Technicians have assigned routes each day. The meter reader will pick up a handheld device from the local office, which has the route for the day. At the end of the day the handheld device is turned in. Our “mobile office” approach to work means that you will never have the same day twice. Our technicians work from their personal vehicle utilizing the handheld devices to ensure clear and complete services. What You’ll Do Read Meters: Walk or drive assigned routes to read gas meters accurately using a handheld electronic device. Inspect Equipment: Check meters, piping, and regulators for visible damage, corrosion, tampering, or leaks. Report Issues: Document broken seals, stuck dials, hazardous conditions, or suspected gas leaks immediately to dispatch. Customer Service: Answer basic customer questions politely and direct complex billing or service inquiries to the main office. Access Properties: Open meter boxes, clear minor debris or vegetation blocking access, and secure gates or property boundaries when leaving. Follow strict safety protocols and federal and local regulations. Communicate professionally with homeowners and members of the public. This role is ideal for individuals who prefer being active rather than sitting behind a desk. You will: Walk approximately 4-7 miles per day Bend, kneel, and lift up to 25 pounds Work in a variety of weather conditions Remain on your feet for extended periods Operate Specialized Equipment You will use industry-leading gas detection technology to identify potential leaks. Job Requirements High school diploma or GED Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record Ability to pass a DOT drug screen and background check Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop on varying terrain, and to lift heavy items Ability to walk 4-7 miles per day in all weather conditions Strong reliability and accountability Proficient using technology (smartphone, tablet) Ability to use simple hand tools Ability to read and understand utility maps Works well within a group as well as individually Preferred — But Not Required No industry experience necessary - we value work ethic, dependability, and a safety-first mindset What Success Looks Like Our strongest technicians consistently demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and technical competence with field equipment. What the POV Program Provides Weekly Vehicle Allowance - Approximately $185 per Week Paid every week alongside your regular paycheck (approximately $9,600 annually). Non-taxable for this position. $300 Monthly Fuel Card A Company fuel card for qualifying business fuel purchases. Your card is issued on your first day and activates automatically about three weeks after you start - no paperwork required. Telematics Device Provided at No Cost Heath provides a small, non-camera GPS device that installs in your vehicle to verify business mileage. Program Qualifications To participate in the POV Program, employees will need to meet a few standard qualifications: Active auto insurance - minimum $100,000/$300,000/$100,000 coverage or $300,000 combined single limit Proof of insurance provided before your first day and at each policy renewal A vehicle that meets Heath’s standards - 4-door, backup camera, hands-free capability, and professional appearance Willingness to have a Heath-provided telematics device installed in your vehicle Full program details are shared upon hire, and a complete POV Program Candidate Summary is provided with your offer.
