Utility Maintenance Worker

Position Title - Utility Maintenance Worker – Public Works (Water/Sewer Production)Position SummaryPerforms a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater production systems and public works utilities. This entry-level position supports daily operations, infrastructure maintenance, and emergency response activities within the Public Works Department.Essential Personnel DesignationThis position is designated as essential personnel. In the event of a natural or manmade disaster, the employee is required to be available for immediate call-in and response.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEssential and other important duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Assist with the maintenance, repair, and installation of water and wastewater lines, valves, hydrants, meters, and related infrastructure.Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on water and sewer systems, lift stations, and associated equipment.Respond to service calls, leaks, line breaks, sewer backups, and other utility-related emergencies.Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment in support of public works operations.Assist with locating utilities, trenching, backfilling, and restoration of work sites.Read and follow work orders, maps, and basic system layouts.Maintain records of work performed, materials used, and service requests.Follow all safety policies and procedures and properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public when performing assigned duties.Support other Public Works operations and projects as assigned.Conditions of EmploymentMust successfully complete and maintain a criminal background check, drug screening, and pre-employment physical examination.Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.Must be able to work on call, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.Must be physically capable of performing strenuous work in hazardous environments, including extreme heat, confined spaces, heights, and adverse weather conditions.Must comply with all Public Works safety policies, procedures, and work rules.Required Education, Experience, Certifications & SkillsHigh school diploma or G.E.D. requiredPrior public works, water, or wastewater experience preferredAbility to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team, and adhere to safety procedures.Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, physical, and criminal background check.DisclaimerThis position description is intended to provide a general overview of the nature and level of work performed and is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, or skills required.
