Paramedic/Firefighter

The City of Fort Lauderdale Paramedics/Firefighters are responsible for the protection and preservation of life and property by responding to emergencies and through the performance of firefighting/rescue tasks and providing emergency medical care. Work often requires the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion, heat, noxious smoke, zero visibility and mental concentration.

There are two steps in the application process:

Step 1: Complete the candidate assessment through Public Safety Answers by no later than 5:00PM on Friday, August 24, 2026.

The candidate assessment is a timed self-administered psychometric assessment. It measures reasoning and problem-solving skills, plus 25 traits, or dimensions of personality, intended to measure an individual's characteristics for the purpose of determining the best fit for employment.

Step 2: Complete the City of Fort Lauderdale employment application and upload all the required documents by the closing date of this posting.

• Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate (EVOC) - Minimum 16-Hour Course
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) - CPR & AED Card or BLS for healthcare provider card by the American Red Cross - CPR & AED
• American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Card
• Pre-job Offer Questionnaire
• Fire Rescue Tobacco Waiver
• Fire Rescue Waiver of Confidential Records
• To claim Veterans' Preference, candidates must attach to the application a copy of military separation papers (DD214) and service-connected disability documentation (if applicable) to meet eligibility requirements as stipulated by Florida Statues.
• If ever arrested, copies of Police Report(s) and Court Disposition(s) must be attached to the application

Qualifications for employment as a Paramedic/Firefighter:

1. Be at least 18 years old.
2. Be a High School graduate or possess a High School Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) from a recognized issuing agency.
3. Been a non-smoker/non-user of tobacco (any form, including products containing nicotine) for at least one (1) year prior to application, remain smoke free during application process, and agree not to smoke or use tobacco (in any form including vaping) on or off duty during the tenure of their employment.
4. Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to the certification or to perjury or false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more under the law of the United States or of any state thereof or under the law of any other country, or dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
5. Possess a State of Florida Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training for Firefighters
6. Possess a State of Florida Paramedic License
7. Possess an American Heart Association BLS - CPR & AED CARD or BLS for Healthcare Provider card by American Red Cross (CPR & AED)
8. Possess an American Heart Association (ACLS) card
9. Possess Emergency Vehicle Operator License (EVOC)
10. Be able to pass a Broward College administered Water Survival Exercise (Swim Test)
11. Possess a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by The National Testing Network.
12. To claim Veterans' Preference, candidates must attach to the application a copy of military separation papers (DD214) and service-connected disability documentation (if applicable) to meet eligibility requirements as stipulated by Florida Statues.

The following employment standards of the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Department may disqualify an applicant (if applicable):

• Use of illegal drugs or use of any tobacco products in any form, including products containing nicotine, within ONE YEAR of the date of the application being submitted.
• Any use of illegal drugs after having been employed by a fire agency, or in a firefighter or medic capacity (including Military Service as a firefighter or medic).
• Accumulation of eight (8) points or more within the past thirty-six (36) months. Four (4) or more moving violations within the past thirty-six (36) months (regardless of adjudication withheld for points) and no more than one (1) moving violation in the six (6) months prior to application.
• A suspension of driver's license within the past thirty-six (36) months.
• A conviction (or pending case) for DUI, DWI, or Hit and Run within the past five (5) years.
• Any significant negative driving history determined by management review of all facts.

The City of Fort Lauderdale receives a high volume of applications, so not every applicant who meets the minimum qualifications will be guaranteed an interview. Candidates are selected for interviews based on how closely their education and work experience match the specific requirements of the position.

Applicants will be subject to an extensive selection and screening process, which may include, but not be limited to evaluation of training and experience; written; oral and performance-based testing; skills assessment; interview; employment check, background investigation; medical examination; and drug screen. For Public Safety positions, the process additionally includes polygraph examinations and psychological evaluations. The expected duration of the selection process varies by position.
