Audio Electronics Bench Technician

Sound Technology Inc

Job Description

Job Description

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Component-Level Audio Electronics Technician to handle diagnostic, repair, and restoration work on an independent contractor (1099) basis.

This is strictly a dedicated audio bench repair role. This position does not involve field AV installation, low-voltage cabling, rack mounting, or live-sound production. You will be responsible for signal tracing, isolating faulty components, reading schematics, and performing precise electronic and mechanical repairs across a wide array of vintage and modern audio gear.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analog & Digital Audio Diagnostics: Trace audio signal paths through preamplifier, tone, power output, and logic stages to isolate failed active/passive components (transistors, op-amps, Zener diodes, capacitors, resistors, transformers, and ICs).
  • Schematic & Service Manual Analysis: Interpret circuit schematics, block diagrams, and service procedures across various audio topologies (solid-state, tube, linear power supplies, class A/AB/D amplifiers).
  • Precision Soldering & Circuit Repair: Perform clean through-hole and surface-mount (SMD) soldering/desoldering, trace repair, and component swaps without damaging delicate PCBs.
  • Audio Bench Testing & Calibration: Set amplifier bias/DC offset, measure output power, test capacitor ESR, check harmonic distortion, and verify channel balance using oscilloscopes, function generators, multimeters, ESR meters, and Variacs.
  • Mechanical & Optical Audio Servicing: Repair, re-belt, lubricate, align, and service mechanical and optical audio transports (CD player laser pickups, tape deck transports, and turntables).
  • Diagnostic Logging: Record diagnostic steps, identify required parts, and log repair notes on job tickets.

Core Qualifications & Technical Experience

Required Technical Skills

  • Proven track record of component-level fault isolation on audio hardware (not just swapping entire circuit boards).
  • Deep understanding of audio power supply topologies, audio amplification circuits, protection circuits, and switching supplies.
  • Proficiency with soldering, desoldering, and heat management on single, double-sided, and SMD audio circuit boards.
  • Hands-on familiarity with standard audio bench procedures (signal tracing with audio generators/scopes, checking DC offset, setting bias).

Experience servicing items such as:

  • Solid-state and tube stereo receivers, integrated amplifiers, and preamplifiers
  • CD players, optical transport mechanisms, and laser pickup replacements
  • Cassette decks, reel-to-reel tape transports, and turntables
  • Pro audio gear (studio outboard gear, mixing consoles, powered monitors)

What Disqualifies an Application? (Read Before Applying)

To save time for both parties, this is strictly an audio hardware bench position .

We will not consider applicants whose primary experience consists of:

  • Running low-voltage cable, mounting TVs, or installing architectural audio
  • Setting up live PA systems, mixing live events, or stage lighting
  • Home automation installation (Control4, Crestron) or network wiring
  • Equipment assembly or cable assembly without component-level schematic troubleshooting experience
