Job Summary:
The Part-Time Psychiatrist – Addiction Medicine provides psychiatric leadership, clinical oversight, and direct patient care across Alpas Wellness's behavioral health and substance use disorder programs. This role combines hands-on clinical practice, including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, diagnostic consultation, and interdisciplinary treatment collaboration, with broader responsibility for supervising, mentoring, and supporting the clinical development of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs). This position reports directly to the Clinical Director.

Working closely with executive, medical, nursing, and clinical leadership, the Psychiatrist helps ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric and addiction treatment services. Key areas of focus include psychiatric quality assurance, psychopharmacology best practices, diagnostic consistency, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and the continued advancement of the organization's psychiatric service line. The position emphasizes physician oversight, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clinical leadership rather than functioning as a high-volume treating provider.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Care and Psychiatric Services

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and medication management for patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions.

  • Provide psychiatric consultation and support for complex behavioral health and addiction medicine cases.

  • Support detoxification and residential treatment programming through withdrawal management guidance and psychopharmacology oversight.

  • Maintain timely, accurate, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record, including evaluations, progress notes, treatment recommendations, discharge summaries, and physician orders.

  • Review medical and psychiatric screening processes to ensure patient needs are appropriately identified and addressed throughout treatment.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, case reviews, and care coordination meetings.

Psychiatric Leadership and Supervision

  • Supervise, mentor, and provide clinical oversight to Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs), including guidance on diagnostic formulation, treatment planning, psychopharmacology, continuity of care, and evidence-based practices.

  • Help establish and maintain psychiatric standards, workflows, protocols, and best practices across the organization.

  • Provide education and clinical guidance to medical, nursing, and clinical staff on psychiatry, addiction medicine, co-occurring disorders, MAT, and psychopharmacology.

  • Support clinical consistency, quality of care, and appropriate utilization of psychiatric services.

Medical Leadership and Quality Oversight

  • Assist executive and operational leadership in developing, implementing, and reviewing psychiatric and medical policies, procedures, and clinical standards.

  • Support regulatory readiness and compliance efforts related to Joint Commission, ASAM criteria, state regulations, payer expectations, and organizational policies.

  • Participate in quality assurance, chart reviews, peer review, and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Monitor and help improve psychiatric and medical performance metrics, including documentation quality, treatment outcomes, continuity of care, MAT utilization, and compliance.

  • Collaborate with leadership on patient acuity, clinical outcomes, risk management, staffing needs, and psychiatric program development.

  • Support on-call psychiatric consultation and emergency response processes as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.

  • Board Certification in Psychiatry required; additional board certification or fellowship training in Addiction Medicine and/or Addiction Psychiatry strongly preferred.

  • Active and unrestricted medical license in the applicable state(s) of practice.

  • DEA registration with ability to prescribe controlled substances, including buprenorphine products

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience treating substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions preferred.

  • Prior supervisory, leadership, or advanced practice provider oversight experience preferred.

  • Experience in detoxification, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), and/or intensive outpatient (IOP) settings preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of ASAM criteria, addiction medicine best practices, co-occurring disorder treatment, and regulatory standards.

  • Familiarity with Joint Commission standards and healthcare quality improvement initiatives preferred.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, collaboration, and clinical documentation skills.
