Dance Instructor

Description:

This position is responsible for creating a positive and engaging classroom environment that fosters an appreciation for the art of dance; teaching age-appropriate dance techniques and creative expression; encouraging confidence and individual growth; and providing a fun, safe, and inclusive learning experience.

Working Hours:

Weekdays, evenings from 4:30-7:30 pm, Saturday mornings from 8:45 am-12:00 pm; hours vary based on enrollment. Program sessions run September-March, April-May, and June-July. Occasional weekend availability may be required based on program needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop lesson plans that provide a balanced dance curriculum and organize class time to ensure preparation, rehearsal, and instruction occur within scheduled periods.
• Adapt curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction in alignment with program philosophy and course standards.
• Evaluate each student's growth, performance, and contribution to group work.
• Assess artistic and social development, prepare progress reports, and maintain required records such as attendance, checklists, and other documentation.
• Prepare students for the annual dance recital, dress rehearsal, and other performances as assigned.
• Select age-appropriate music and choreography that aligns with Recreation Department standards.
• Assist with recital planning, costume coordination, and communication with families as needed.
• Arrive prior to class to prepare equipment and remain after class to ensure the studio is clean and ready for the next program.
• Report equipment, facility, or safety concerns to the Recreation Department.
• Supervise students during arrival and dismissal until they are released to an authorized adult.
• Communicate with parents and Recreation Department staff regarding student progress and program updates.
• Participate in staff meetings and support department activities as assigned.
• Work cooperatively with Recreation Department staff to plan and deliver dance programming for productions and related events.
• Complete attendance records, incident reports, lesson plans, and required documentation accurately and on time.
• Provide excellent customer service by responding professionally to participant and parent questions and representing the Recreation Department in a positive manner.
• Follow all Recreation Department policies, procedures, safety practices, and emergency protocols.

Qualifications:

Must be at least 18 years of age. Previous dance teaching experience is required. Experience working with children of various ages is preferred. Knowledge of multiple dance styles is preferred.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to successfully pass a background screening. CPR and First Aid certification required, or ability to obtain within 2 months. Complete Illinois Mandated Reporter Training upon hire.

• Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and program stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple classes, rehearsals, and schedules.
• Ability to remain calm, flexible, and supportive in fast-paced or high-energy class environments.
• Knowledge of a variety of dance techniques and styles; effective instructional and choreography methods; and best practices for teaching and supervising youth of varying ages and skill levels in a dance classroom setting.
• Ability to positively motivate students while maintaining a fun, safe, and inclusive classroom environment.

Salary:

• Starting Wage: $16.50 per hour
