MACHINIST AUTOMOTIVE Department of Fleet and Facility Management – Bureau of Fleet Services Number of Positions: 16 (Additional Vacancies Possible Pending Budget Approval) Starting Salary: $60.39 per hour These positions are open to the public and to current City employees covered under the City’s collective bargaining agreement with the Machinists Lodge 126. Only employees with job titles in Bargaining Unit 36 are eligible to bid. Job Overview The Department of Fleet and Facility Management is seeking Machinist Automotives to serve as automotive service technicians. Responsibilities include inspection, repair, and maintenance of mechanical systems and components in automobiles and light and heavy‑duty gasoline and diesel‑driven automotive equipment. Essential Duties Inspect vehicles to ensure mechanical components and automotive systems are secure and operating properly. Read work orders, diagnose symptoms or problems, and determine sources of malfunctions using testing equipment. Refer to technical service manuals and schematics to troubleshoot. Use hand and power tools to dismantle, repair, or replace worn parts and reassemble components. Overhaul and replace engines; rebuild components. Repair or replace hoses, valves, compressors, pumps, drive shafts, differentials, and transmissions. Align and balance wheels; repair or replace tie rods. Run operational tests to verify repairs. Prepare work activity reports. Fabricate metal parts and perform welding or cutting as required. Use hydraulic jacks or hoists to raise vehicles for inspection. Maintain clean and orderly work areas. Perform work on electrical components of automotive equipment as ancillary to other work. Additional and Physical Requirements Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds). Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach quickly. Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and equipment. Exposure to loud noise, fumes or dust, oily environments, hazardous conditions. Qualifications A valid State of Illinois driver’s license. Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology plus two years of relevant experience, OR Completion of an accredited training program in Automotive Service Technology plus two years of relevant experience, OR Four years of experience as an automotive technician, OR Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology or related field.
