Bus Driver

This position is responsible for ensuring the safe and timely transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities.

1. Follows predetermined routes consistently and adheres to set schedules to ensure reliable student transportation.

2. Performs thorough pre-trip inspections, including air brake checks, to guarantee vehicle safety and readiness.

3. Ensures the bus remains clean, fueled, and free from graffiti, extending these standards to any temporary vehicles assigned.

4. Promptly reports any accidents, vehicle damage, or student injuries, completing detailed reports as required.

5. Monitors and manages student behavior during transit, enforcing safe crossing practices and discipline in line with District guidelines.

6. Effectively communicates with school staff and parents regarding student behaviors and transportation concerns.

7. Implements and manages onboard discipline strategies according to District transportation policies.

8. Educates students about bus safety rules and regulations to foster a safe riding environment.

9. Ensures that only authorized individuals are transported on assigned routes.

10. Skillfully operates two-way radios and other communication devices in compliance with departmental protocols.

11. Actively participates in required training sessions, maintaining up-to-date certifications and enhancing job skills.

12. Diligently follows all District policies as outlined in the Transportation Handbook, contributing to team meetings and in-service training.

13. Assists with various additional duties as needed, including substituting as a driver, attendant, or dispatcher.

14. Collaborates with transportation coordinators, as assigned, to optimize bus routes and schedules, maximizing efficiency and minimizing delays based on real-time traffic conditions and school events.

15. Participates, as directed, in the development and periodic review of safety protocols and emergency response strategies, contributing insights to enhance safety measures.

16. Serves as a mentor for new and less experienced drivers, providing guidance on navigating routes, handling challenging behaviors, and adhering to District policies.

17. Fosters positive relationships with students to create a supportive and respectful environment on the bus, which aids in behavior management.

18. Supports the implementation of onboard technologies, as directed, and assists in the routine troubleshooting of technologies, as necessary.

19. Provides feedback to transportation management, as required, on potential improvements in bus services, based on daily observations and interactions.

20. Actively participates in safety drills, including evacuation exercises and first aid training, ensuring readiness for emergencies.

21. Facilitates communication between the school and parents regarding transportation schedules, changes, and concerns, building trust with families.

22. Participates in initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of school transportation, such as idling reduction programs and promoting fuel-efficient driving practices.

23. Performs all duties in accordance with standard procedures and protocols established by the Transportation Department and the District, and as set forth by governing entities and regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, Texas Education Code, Texas Administrative Code, Texas Transportation Code, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Health & Safety Code, Texas Accessibility Standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).

24. Demonstrates and maintains proficient working knowledge and understanding of compliance requirements and standards including, but not limited to, student transportation safety, workplace safety, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, safe operation of bus equipment, emergency evacuation procedures, as well as other related requirements as they pertain to the job function.

25. Monitors respective work activity for variances and anomalies.

26. Identifies and timely reports any known or suspected compliance issues to appropriate personnel.

27. Assists with audits and the preparation for audits, whether initiated internally or externally, as assigned.

28. Adheres to all other District wide policies and procedures including, but not limited to, human resources, safety, and emergency protocols.

29. Demonstrates support towards the District's Shared Vision, Mission, and Promise 2 Purpose.

30. Displays integrity, responsibility, accountability, teamwork, and ethics.

31. Assists department leadership in the compilation of miscellaneous confidential reports, as requested.

32. Attends departmental and organizational meetings, as required.

33. Participates in continuing education programs and related activities relevant to the job function, as required.

34. Performs assigned job duties and responsibilities in accordance with established performance expectations, as well as with District policies, procedures, protocols and standard practices.

35. Demonstrates basic working knowledge and understanding of software systems and applications pertaining to student transportation management, incident reporting, GPS, training and compliance, communication, and other programs relevant to the job function.

36. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience & Credential Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent GED
• Prior experience working in a school bus capacity within a public school setting
• Or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
• Active, Valid, and In Good Standing Texas Commercial Driver's License with Class B, (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus Endorsements
• Active, Valid, and In Good Standing school bus safety education certification

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

This position requires the ability to sit for prolonged periods while operating the school bus, utilizing hands and feet to control various controls and mechanisms. Bus drivers must be capable of lifting and carrying items weighing up to 100 lbs, which may include emergency equipment or aiding in student mobility. The role requires acute visual and auditory capabilities for safe driving practices, reading signs and paperwork, and communicating effectively with students and staff. Drivers are frequently required to quickly enter and exit the bus to assist students, particularly in emergency situations or when managing boarding and disembarking. The working environment involves operating a school bus on public roadways, where drivers face regular exposure to diverse weather conditions such as rain, snow, heat, and cold. Additionally, bus drivers encounter moderate to high noise levels from the bus and traffic, alongside the stress related to adhering to strict schedules and managing student behavior effectively. Safety is paramount, and drivers must navigate traffic hazards and ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers. The role involves a significant responsibility for maintaining a calm, safe, and orderly environment within the bus under varying and sometimes challenging conditions.
