Job Title: Machine Operator
Job Description
The Machine Operator safely and efficiently operates large-scale plastics processing equipment, including granulators, shredders, color systems, wet sorter systems, and extruders. This role focuses on producing a high-quality product through accurate material handling, careful monitoring of machine performance, and strict adherence to production and quality procedures.
Responsibilities
- Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the Run Instruction Sheet (RIS) to set up, operate, adjust, and shut down assigned machines.
- Perform start-up, steady-state operation, shutdown, basic troubleshooting, cleaning, and general maintenance of systems such as granulators, shredders, color systems, wet sorter systems, and extruders.
- Collect regular product samples and systematically probe boxes as directed by the RIS, reporting any irregularities to laboratory personnel and supervisors.
- Thoroughly clean boxes, lids, and skids before use, inspect packaging for damage or defects, and dispose of any substandard materials prior to reuse.
- Accurately complete the Run Number Time Log at the end of each shift and ensure all production records are up to date.
- Update the RIS as needed based on run conditions and promptly communicate changes or observations to the supervisor.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the shift, following all housekeeping and safety guidelines.
- Maintain and accurately complete production ledgers, including inbound, outbound, reject, and run logs, as well as quality control records.
- Complete Work in Process (WIP) and Ready for Sale (RFS) tags accurately and legibly.
- Compute weights using correct gross, tare, and net figures and record all weights in the appropriate logs or systems.
- Weigh materials in boxes and hoppers and ensure all weight measurements are recorded correctly.
- Obtain certification as a forklift and aerial lift operator as needed and operate this equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist in training new associates by demonstrating proper machine operation, safety practices, and documentation procedures.
- Load and unload materials and place them into designated inventory locations using a forklift or pallet jack.
- Calculate pounds per hour processed during each run and document production rates to support productivity tracking.
- Compute percentages to document run conditions and productivity standards, using basic math skills to support process control.
- Prepare boxes for material by placing labels in proper locations and removing extra or incorrect labels to ensure accurate identification.
- Participate actively in shift meetings and training sessions, sharing observations and suggestions for process improvements.
- Climb stairs and use aerial lifts as needed to access upper parts of systems, troubleshoot issues, and clear jams safely.
- Follow all plant safety rules, including the proper use of personal protective equipment, and immediately report any hazards or incidents.
Essential Skills
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment around machines is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical computations, including addition, subtraction, and calculating percentages.
- Strong handwriting and legible record-keeping skills to ensure the next operator can clearly read notes and logs.
- Experience troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment with a focus on problem solving and process issues rather than mechanical or electrical repair.
- Sit-down forklift experience and the ability to safely operate a forklift in a production environment.
- Ability to stand for the duration of the shift, except during scheduled breaks.
- Ability to lift up to 65 pounds, though not on a repetitive basis.
- Comfort working at heights and willingness to use an aerial lift up to approximately 25 feet while wearing a harness.
- Ownership of steel-toed or composite-toed shoes or boots suitable for a manufacturing environment.
- Willingness and ability to work mandated Saturdays when business needs require it.
- Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with large industrial machinery.
- Attention to detail in following written instructions, completing logs, and performing quality checks.
- Ability to perform quality inspections and basic quality checks on products and materials.
- Capability to work safely in a noisy, warm, and active manufacturing setting.
- Willingness to adhere to strict safety and PPE requirements, including hearing and eye protection.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in plastics manufacturing, including exposure to injection molding, extrusion, or extrusion machines, is beneficial.
- Previous machine operation experience in a production environment is an advantage.
- Experience in general production, general labor, or material handling is helpful.
- Experience with inspection and quality control processes in a manufacturing setting.
- Familiarity with computing production metrics such as pounds per hour and percentage-based productivity standards.
- Comfort working with production documentation such as production ledgers, WIP tags, and RFS tags.
- Ability to assist with training new team members and support a collaborative team environment.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to learn new equipment and processes.
- Capability to adapt to different shifts and production demands as needed.
Why Work Here?
You will join a rapidly growing facility that is investing in new equipment and adding an entire second shift to support its ambitious growth goals. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, prescription drug coverage, dental, and vision insurance, along with flexible spending accounts, life and AD&D coverage, disability benefits, an employee assistance program, and a range of voluntary benefits and valuable extras. You can also take advantage of retirement savings options such as a 401(k) and stock-related programs. The culture emphasizes internal growth and advancement, with clear opportunities to move into leadership roles within 12–18 months for high-performing employees. You will work in a supportive environment that values training, safety, and continuous improvement, providing a stable career path and the chance to build long-term skills in a modern manufacturing operation.
Work Environment
This role is based in a traditional manufacturing facility focused on plastics processing and recycling. The plant operates multiple shifts: a first shift from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; a second shift from 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Monday through Friday; and a third shift from 11:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., Sunday night through Thursday night. The systems and machines are large, in some cases reaching two stories high, and perform a variety of tasks to receive, separate, and process plastic materials. The environment includes some dust and noise, so hearing and eye protection are required at all times in the plant. Employees must be comfortable climbing stairs and using aerial lifts to access upper parts of the systems, troubleshoot issues, and clear jams. Despite being a recycling facility, the plant is kept relatively clean; however, certain areas can become hot in the summer, particularly near some machines, while conditions are comfortable to cool in the winter. Dock work may involve spending more time along the outer wall of the facility, loading and unloading trucks as a primary duty.
The dress code and PPE requirements are strict to ensure safety around moving machinery. Clothing must not be excessively baggy to avoid getting caught in equipment, and overly tight clothing that restricts movement is discouraged. Tank tops, low-cut, or midriff shirts are not allowed, though sleeveless shirts are permitted. Clothing must be free of large holes, rips, or tears. Steel-toed or composite-toed shoes or boots are mandatory. Jewelry or items that dangle from the neck, wrists, or hands are not permitted. Long hair that touches the shoulders must be properly secured to prevent it from dangling. Hoodie sweatshirts or jackets with loose drawstrings are not allowed. Shorts are prohibited, and pants must fit securely at the waist without undergarments showing; belts should be worn if needed to keep pants in place. Employees are expected to maintain good personal hygiene. Cell phones and smart watches are not allowed on the production floor or on forklifts for any reason and must be kept in lockers or vehicles rather than in pockets while on the floor. The workplace emphasizes safety, organization, and professionalism in all aspects of daily operations.
