Join Team Bronson and be part of the experience at BMH Bronson Methodist Hospital. As a Polysomnographic Technologist, you will work under the general supervision of the Practice Manager for Bronson Sleep Lab or designee to independently perform, score, and support comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic sleep studies.
The Polysomnographic Technologist supports accreditation quality standards, performs the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision (including acting as a clinical resource or preceptor) of other staff, including trainees. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
This position offers a total sign-on/retention bonus of $8,000 for external candidates only.
First Shift, full time, 36 hours per week.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include maintaining strict confidentiality, knowledge of basic medical procedures, protocols, and patient management, ability to focus and function effectively while managing multiple distractions, ability to accurately collect, document, and communicate information, ability to work collaboratively in high-stress environments, understanding and ability to follow written, verbal, and diagrammatic instructions, demonstrated professionalism, empathy, and customer service focus, ability to work both independently (within scope) and as part of a team, strong decision-making, problem-solving, and time-management skills, and ability to adapt to changing information, workflows, and patient needs.
Essential job functions include collecting, analyzing, and integrating patient information to identify and meet the patient-specific needs, verifying medical orders and established testing protocols/procedures, preparing patients for sleep studies by explaining procedures and addressing questions or concerns, preparing, calibrating, and applying equipment, electrodes, and sensors according to accepted standards, performing physiologic calibrations and ensuring signal integrity, independently scoring sleep/wake stages and clinical events using current AASM standards, applying clinical judgment to recognize abnormal findings, troubleshooting study issues in real time, and escalating concerns appropriately per protocol, participating in protocol refinement and continuous improvement related to scoring accuracy and clinical outcomes, performing routine PAP mask fitting, performing sleep study procedures (e.g., MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP titration, oxygen studies) as permitted by policy and compliance requirements, performing home sleep study procedures according to policy and compliance requirements, monitoring study progress and documenting observations, events, and technical issues, following "lights out" and "lights on" procedures, ensuring proper documentation, supporting age-appropriate care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, overseeing and performing difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions, scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines, scoring clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to specific protocols/procedures, generating accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data, evaluating sleep study related equipment and inventory, performing related duties as assigned, participating in equipment care, maintenance, and infection control practices, supporting compliance with AASM, Joint Commission, CMS, and payer requirements, participating in quality assurance activities including inter-scorer reliability, chart audits, and process improvement efforts, assisting in preparation for regulatory and accreditation surveys and corrective action planning as applicable, and serving as a clinical resource, mentor, or preceptor for other staff and trainees.
Physical and environmental requirements include work requiring sustained mental/visual focus and hand-eye coordination, regular lifting of equipment or supplies up to 50 pounds, with assistance as needed, ability to work overnight shifts and in dimly lit environments common to sleep lab settings, prolonged standing, walking, bending, and reaching during overnight shifts, and repetitive fine motor movements related to electrode application and equipment operation.
