This job was posted by : For more information, please see: Fredonia Regional Hospital Medical Lab Technician Department: Laboratory Job Title: Medical Lab Technician Reports to: Lab Director Type of Position: Full time Part- time PRN Hours / weekly 40 Varies Job Summary: The MLT will fill a professional laboratory position requiring formal training and licensure. They will be proficient in all clinical laboratory disciplines, including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, and Urinalysis. They will perform phlebotomy with patients of all ages. They will assist the laboratory supervisor in providing a full range of clinical laboratory services including QA. They will perform quality control analysis of data and use professional judgment concerning the validity of test results. Educational Requirements: Associates degree in a Medical Technology field National Certification ((MLT(ASCP), (CLS(NCA)) recommended On-site Competency Testing required Basic Computer Skills. Working conditions: Healthcare environment may be exposed to patients with communicable disease and situations and/ or patients that have the potential for exposure to infectious / hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required. Physical requirements: Standing and walking up to 75% to 100% of the time. Sitting up to 25% of the time. Talk and hear patients and co-workers 2/3 or more of the shift. Repetitive use of hands 2/3 or more of the shift. Stoop, kneel or crouch up to 1/3 of the shift. Reaches with hands and arms up to 2/3 of the shift. Can carry up to 50 pounds. Can push up to 50 pounds. Accurate vision up to 20 feet 100% of the time. Adequate hearing to converse with others, use the telephone, hear alarms, and call system. Ability to grasp simple / light and firm / heavy objects up to 1/3 or more of the shift. Possesses reading, writing, and communication skills to be understood by others. Ability to tolerate unpleasant situations that may be presented by the patient or others. Responsibilities: Performs a variety of standardized clinical laboratory determinations in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology and Urinalysis. The types of determinations range from routine waived testing to moderate complexity testing that may require professional judgment and interpretation. Maintains adequate records of test results. Performs phlebotomies on patients of all ages, physical conditions and in a variety of settings. Performs quality control, keeps adequate records, reviews QC data on graphs or enters into computers as required. Analyzes QC data as a basis for determining the acceptability of patient test results. Performs monthly QA on pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing phases. Performs preventative maintenance and may on occasion be required to troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning laboratory instruments. Must take call for the laboratory on evenings, nights, weekends and holidays, as required. Must be able to work alone and sometimes under the stress and pressure of emergency situations. The employee must exercise discretion with test results as patient confidentiality issues are involved. Performs collection of drug screens (Employee and/or Out Patient). Attends all mandatory meetings. Performs other duties as assigned, this may include special projects or sitting on committees as a laboratory representative. This position requires a close professional working relationship with the lab director and staff in order to provide optimal lab services. The MLT will work cooperativ ly with health care providers and the nursing staff and will exercise discretion, patience, and tact when dealing with patients.
