Morrison Mentors, Inc. is a nonprofit organization based in Hempstead, New York, that delivers hands-on STEM learning programs for students in grades K-12, and we rely on a team of talented instructors, mentors, and technical interns to help bring these experiences to life. About the Role: Morrison Mentors is seeking caring, patient, and enthusiastic students to join our team as STEM Assistants. This in‑person role supports classroom instruction by helping lead hands‑on activities, guiding students through creative projects, and fostering a positive learning environment where children feel confident, curious, and supported. If you’ve worked as a camp counselor, supported after‑school programs, helped children with art or craft projects, volunteered with youth groups, or simply enjoy being around young learners, your experience is highly valuable here. Prior teaching experience is preferred but not required; we provide training and support. Work Schedule In‑person only (Instructors report to the main office and a shuttle drives them to and from our partner sites; We are located at 250 Fulton Ave,Hempstead Ny) Part‑time during the school year; More hours available during summer/ winter breaks Students with broader or alternative availability are encouraged to share this information with us Preferred availability: During the school year (fall and Spring) : Minimum availability of Any 2 or 3 days from 12:00 PM–5:00 PM or 1:00 P–6:00 PM During the Summer : Morning:8:00 AM–12:00 PM; Afternoon:12:00 PM–4:00 PM; Full‑day:8:00 AM–4:00 PM; Working 4-5days per week Compensation: Rate of $18–$20 per hour, depending on experience. Key Responsibilities Assist lead instructors in delivering engaging lessons and hands‑on activities Support students during classroom projects, helping them stay engaged and confident Prepare materials for daily activities, including crafts, group work and learning centers Maintain an organized, welcoming classroom environment Provide gentle guidance and encouragement to students Communicate effectively with teachers and staff to support classroom routines Qualifications Experience working with children in settings such as camps, after‑school programs, youth groups, tutoring, childcare, or community programs s helpful but not required. Comfort supporting young learners with patience, empathy, and clear communication Familiarity with early childhood or elementary‑aged students is a plus Background in education or supporting children with diverse needs is helpful but not required For current college students: Morrison Mentors is an approved Federal Work‑Study site at several colleges and universities. Students who receive Federal Work‑Study may be able to use their award with us. Please check with your school’s financial aid office to confirm your eligibility. Community Service & Volunteer Credit As a local nonprofit serving the Long Island community, we can also serve as a community service or volunteer site for students who need hours for student organizations, service‑learning programs, or other school‑based requirements. Students should confirm with their school’s community service or student affairs office whether hours completed with us can count toward their specific program. If your major or department requires a minimum number of community‑based hours for graduation or experiential learning, please let us know. We may be able to accommodate these requirements if your skills align with our needs.
