Adolescent Mental Health Technician - Deescalation & Care

Mental Health Technician/BH (No College Degree Required) Newport News Behavioral Health Center, Newport News, VA. Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108‑bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment facility for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11‑18 years. The center offers an on‑site certified school, therapists, and vocational programming. Job Summary As a member of the program team, observe and report physical and behavioral symptoms under the supervision of the Program Coordinator. The Mental Health Technician (MHT) actively participates in the implementation of physical care, therapeutic activities, and the academic program. Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for residents, implementing functional behavioral assessment and behavior intervention plans as well as individualized academic or behavioral goals, accommodations, and services as defined by Individualized Instructional Plans (IIPs), Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and 504 Plans. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Serve as a role model to staff and residents in dress and exercises, following appropriate interventions under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Program Manager, and/or Nurse. Review the resident’s chart to learn their history and the Initial Treatment Plan; refer any questions to the Program Coordinator, Program Manager, and/or Nurse on duty. Perform proper Handle with Care techniques, demonstrating knowledge of resident and staff safety. Exhibit excellent verbal de‑escalation skills. Exercise appropriate interventions under the direction of the Program Coordinator, Program Manager, and/or Nurse. Provide appropriate crisis intervention strategies by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de‑escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns, and following proper restraint technique guidelines. Qualifications Basic Qualifications Must be at least 21 years of age. Must have one of the following: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in an area of human services (e.g., psychology, sociology, political science, counseling, criminal justice, pastoral counseling, elementary/special education, or family therapy). High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) equivalent, plus a minimum of 1 year of experience (paid or unpaid) in a human service field that involves direct contact with individuals receiving services.
