Director - Process Engineering / Senior Principal Research Scientist

AbbVie seeks a Senior Principal Research Scientist or Director of Process Engineering to lead drug product manufacturing development for small molecule candidates. The role involves scaling laboratory processes to commercial production and may include technical leadership responsibilities at the director level.

Responsibilities

  • Lead early-phase drug product manufacturing process development for synthetic molecule pipeline candidates
  • Collaborate with CMC teams to align manufacturing processes with commercial manufacturing sites
  • Troubleshoot complex process and material issues with creativity and scientific rigor
  • Mentor peers and advance scientific expertise within the function; at director level, provide technical oversight of team members
  • Drive development of technologies and innovations to expand small molecule formulation capabilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in science field with 18 years of related experience, or Master's/PharmD with 16 years, or PhD with 10 years
  • Demonstrated history of innovation and new or improved product releases
  • Expertise in drug product manufacturing platforms: compression, granulation, extrusion, tableting, encapsulation, coating
  • Strong understanding of powder material properties and manufacturability
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and maintain strong working relationships
  • Proven project leadership in drug product development from concept to commercialization
