Radiologic Technologist

The Radiologic Technologist performs diagnostic general radiological procedures utilizing various imaging equipment to assist in the diagnosis of disease and injuries. Essential functions include performing radiographic procedures by acquiring and processing patient exams in accordance with accrediting bodies and manufacturer guidelines, as outlined in department protocols. The technologist reviews cases with the radiologist when appropriate. They review labs and patient history to perform the correct exam. The role involves administering IV contrast and oral/rectal contrast when appropriate. Recognition and response to any adverse reactions or allergic reactions is essential. The technologist administers IV contrast material by means of an existing IV line or by performing veni-puncture. Screening patients for the possibility of pregnancy and performing pregnancy testing if applicable is required. Responsibility for reviewing radiology orders for completeness and accuracy is necessary. They review patient history and supporting clinical data for medical necessity. The technologist takes steps to acquire additional information if needed from the patient, ordering provider, and/or Radiologist. Demonstrating acceptable imaging quality standards by critiquing positioning, technical factors, and alignment is essential. They review patient data for accuracy, quality, and completeness. Transferring and verifying image data in PACS and providing necessary medical history and information for Radiologist interpretation is part of the job. Utilizing the web servers and email systems to send exams for preliminary readings after hours is required. The technologist maintains imaging equipment and workplace environment, including maintaining supply inventories and orderliness of the work area. Recognizing malfunctions and service needs and reporting them in a timely manner is important. Ensuring patient, visitor, and environmental safety is a key responsibility. Reporting safety events immediately, including those that are a near miss, is critical. Assisting in the instruction of students and new staff as necessary is expected. The technologist may perform duties of Rad Tech Lead or Imaging Coordinator in their absence. Meeting productivity levels established by department benchmarking is required. They assist other areas during downtimes to maintain productivity. They may be required to perform duties of other modalities within the department to which they hold licensure. Compliance with other job descriptions of cross-trained modalities also performed within the department is essential. Required secondary registries are not necessary for cross-trained modalities unless specified by compliance, licensure, or accrediting bodies.
