GENERAL MANAGER

 

REPORTS TO                            Board Chair

 

WORKS WITH                          Board of Directors, Artistic Director, Volunteers

 

POSITION STATUS                    Part-time, employee (25-30 hours per week)

 

LOCATION                               Except as required at concerts, community events, and some rehearsals, this position may be performed remotely.

 

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

The General Manager is responsible for the administration and management of all non-music-related operations of the Women’s Chorus of Dallas. The GM works with the Artistic Director and Board, and liaises with Chorus members, partner organizations, media and the public.

 

Specific duties include:

 

Management

• Schedule, train, and manage volunteers; develop volunteers to carry out high-level tasks.

• Assist with fundraising efforts, including management of fundraisers.

• Work with other staff and the Board to prepare and submit grant requests and reports.

• Execute/manage the design & printing of programs, season brochures, tickets, posters & other media.

• Carry out marketing and development plans with Artistic Director (AD), including writing and sending press releases, contracting business for advertising or sponsorships, and maintaining contact with donors.

• Marketing concerts, open rehearsals, and events, closely coordinated with Social Media Manager.

• Manage office and keep all office equipment in good working order.

 

With Board alignment, all tasks below may be performed by volunteers under the General Manager’s supervision.

 

Communications

• Answer and handle all phone calls, pick up mail, and respond in a timely manner.

• Read, answer and appropriately distribute emails.

• Liaise with the Sammons Center offices, including reserving space when needed.

• Maintain contact with donors and donor prospects.

• Represent the chorus at public events as needed.

• Maintain the chorus Website, Facebook, and YouTube pages.

• Provide monthly report on activities to AD before board meetings.

 

Finance

 

Collaborate with the Board Treasurer to manage accounts payable and accounts receivable on a week-to-week basis. 

Write and mail thank you notes or letters in a timely manner to donors, and/or sponsors.

• Deliver prepared deposits to the bank in a timely manner.

• Manage Capital Club payments, maintain contact with members.

• Assist Treasurer in preparing records for audit as needed.

 

 

Performances

• Sell season and single concert tickets, keep records, and provide statistical reporting to the AD.

• Liaise with venue, including contracting, payments, ticketing, and event day logistics.

• Manage front of house, including set up and tear down of lobby for ticket sales, merchandise sales, receptions, décor and other needs as required.

• Assist with other performance-related tasks as requested by AD/Board

 

General

• Maintain database(s) (members, patrons, donors, advertisers, vendors, etc.)

• Organize and maintain supplies and merchandise.

• Maintain inventory of items in the office.

• Other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Skills

High degree of organization

Self-starter, able to work with limited supervision

Project/event management

High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, or Google equivalents.

Volunteer recruitment and management 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including writing and proofreading

Experience in performing arts and/or nonprofit a plus

Graphic design and marketing skills are a plus

 

Physical and logistical abilities

Able to sit and use a computer for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Able to lift at least 30 pounds.

Must have reliable personal transportation.

Must be able to represent the chorus at concerts and other community events.

 

Education

Bachelor’s degree or two years of related experience in administration, development, marketing/public relations preferred, preferably in the arts or non-profit industry.

The Women’s Chorus of Dallas was founded in 1989. It has grown into one of the nation’s most renowned women’s choruses—with 11 albums and four performances at Carnegie Hall—while remaining a haven for women from all backgrounds to lend their voices in support of other organizations that champion LGBTQ+ rights, human rights, and women’s issues.
Under the 22-year leadership of Artistic Director Melinda Imthurn, the Chorus has collaborated with many other arts groups including Dallas Black Dance Theater, TITAS, Turtle Creek Chorale, Texas Woman’s University, and Metropolitan Winds. TWCD was the first Dallas chorus to perform at Moody Performance Hall.
Notable artists we’ve performed with include the world-renowned Kronos String Quartet, Tony-Award winner Victoria Clark, actor/singer Hugh Jackman, queer icon Lesley Gore, and singer and activist Demi Lovato. The Chorus also contributes to the repertory of quality works for women’s choruses by commissioning new works.
TWCD brings music to the community through free concert tickets and onsite outreach performances for clients of social service agencies. At each season concert, TWCD reserves up to 200 seats for those served by domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, addiction recovery centers, AIDS services, and senior centers. TWCD also spotlights and raises funds for important causes such as AIDS awareness, domestic violence prevention, human rights, breast cancer research, and LGBTQ+ concerns.
