Pathologists' Assistant

Job Description Under the combined supervision of the medical director and supervisor of the cutting room, the Pathologist’s Assistant assists in the gross description and dissection of all types of tissues sent to the surgical pathology laboratory for analysis, including high‑complexity specimens. The Pathologist’s Assistant is an integral part of resident training, educating pathology residents in proper dissection and submission of tissues for microscopic analysis and ensuring standardization of specimen processing and patient safety. Shift: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Essential Responsibilities Dictate gross descriptions and dissect all types of surgical specimens (e.g., type, size, weight, color, and anatomic characteristics), including high‑complexity specimens. Select appropriate tissue sections for microscopic examination, ensuring optimal pathology diagnosis, staging tumors, margin evaluation, and lymph node evaluation. Assist and educate residents in orientation and gross dissection of all surgical pathology specimens. Operate the laboratory information system in accordance with standard operating procedures to ensure appropriate specimen handling. May perform intraoperative consultations, including gross description, selection of tissues for sectioning, microtomy, and tissue staining. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in the Pathologist Assistant program in progress and to be completed prior to start date. ASCP Registered certification required, with registration with the American Association of Pathologist Assistants desirable. Two years of experience in an academic medical center setting preferred. 1–3 years of related work experience required. New graduates and out‑of‑state Master’s‑prepared Pathologist Assistants are expected to obtain ASCP certification within 3–6 months of hire date. Advanced technical computer skills for the functional area and related systems. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience in an academic medical center performing this position as a PA. Knowledge: Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices, and policies, applying them in complex varied situations. Team Work: Leads and directs multiple collaborative teams for large projects or groups within the organization and across functional areas. Customer Service: Provides a high level of customer service and staff training, resolving service issues in a timely and respectful manner. Physical Nature of the Job Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. The job is physical in nature and requires standing and/or moving around throughout the majority of the shift. Pay Range USD $114,400.00 – $153,967.00 per year. The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, including seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
