Title: Nurses Aid

Reports To: RN, LPN, Director of Nursing, and House Supervisor

I. Summary

The Nurse Aide is an integral part of the nursing staff and should exhibit a genuine interest in the welfare of the patients admitted to the hospital. This person must maintain a professional relationship with co-workers and must be willing and able to take constructive criticism and direction from licensed personnel.

II. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

· Performs basic care for the assigned pediatric to adult patients such as bathing, linen changes, feeding, oral hygiene, shaving, HS care, measurement of height and weight, vital signs, turning patients, Intake, and output.

· Documents patient information on approved forms and/or EMR such as Intake and Output, vital signs/work sheets, assessment forms, turning schedule.

· Maintain patient safety to prevent falls such as keeping bed in low position, use of side rails, bed alarm, and ant slip socks and notifies the nurse of potential risks.

· Reports abnormal vital signs or change in patient’s condition to licensed staff.

· Maintains cleanliness of patient’s rooms, eating areas, and utility room.

· Provides meal trays, snacks, and ice to patients.

· Uses safe body mechanics to prevent injury to self and others.

· Uses appropriate CBC Infection Control procedures when caring for patients.

· Utilizes proper handwashing techniques to prevent transmission of disease.

· Collects stool and urine specimens.

· Maintains knowledge of equipment used in nursing unit such as DynaMap, scales, patient transfer device and scales.

· Answers call lights and carries out patient request within their scope of practice.

· Transports patients by wheelchair or stretcher to ancillary units and from ER when needed.

· Administers enemas and performs catheter care

· Measures I&O on patients (pediatric to geriatric) as directed by nursing staff

· Performs surgical preps as directed by nursing staff, on all patients pediatric to geriatric.

· Ambulates patients as directed by nursing staff.

· Follows hospital time and attendance rules, adheres to time clock rules and regulations.

· Attends staff meetings and gives suggestions for improvement of the department.

· Upgrades skills with available in services.

· Performs any other duties within scope of practice as directed by licensed staff.

IV. Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A certified nursing assistant licenses from a state accredited school is suggested.

V. Skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract numbers and to multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money, height and weight measurements, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
