Date Submitted: June 8, 2026 Job Title: Broadcast Engineer Station: KZMU Location: Moab, Utah Deadline to Apply: Open Until Filled Salary Range: $50-100 depending on experience Job Description: KZMU Moab Community Radio is seeking a part time Broadcast Engineer to join our energetic and dynamic team. The Engineer works closely with the rest of the staff to ensure the success of the station’s efforts, chiefly through managing our FM frequencies and web stream. The Engineer ensures KZMU, Moab Community Radio and all associated signals have a high quality technical and aesthetic audio. KZMU is a supportive and collaborative environment. We prioritize mental and emotional health and safety at the station. Recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce is a high priority at KZMU. This position is a part time, non-exempt, hourly position at approximately 10-20 hours per month depending on the station’s needs and agreed upon projects at a rate of $50-$100 per hour depending on experience. Hours will vary on a monthly basis based on project needs. In the first approximately 3-4 months after being hired, the Broadcast Engineer can expect to work more hours to inventory and test equipment, make necessary repairs, and complete documentation for all broadcast and music equipment and systems. Candidates who have audio engineering experience or other engineering experience (even if this is not directly related to Broadcast Engineering) and/or are able to learn audio engineering duties quickly are encouraged to apply. On-the-job training with an experienced engineer will be provided. KZMU is willing to provide funding for SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineer) courses for selected candidates, as needed. Application period opens Friday, June 5, 2026 and will remain open until filled. This position will start as soon as an appropriate candidate is identified. Responsibilities: Designated as KZMU’s “Chief Operator” on all FCC communications. Possesses a complete understanding of overall station technical operation. Responsible for FCC compliance as a transmitting facility. Responsible for Emergency Alert System (EAS) function and compliance. Reviews and keeps a record of EAS/operational logs weekly to maintain compliance and monitor deviations from “normal” operating standards. The weekly log should note and provide reasons for any instances of non-compliance and actions taken to correct non-compliance. Monitors multiple frequencies and KZMU’s web stream. Maintains all equipment (broadcast, music, post‑production). Provides preventative maintenance and implements proper equipment care and storage methods. Implements necessary repairs and upgrades. Maintains documentation for all equipment, including repairs and modifications made. Responsible for evaluation, recommendation, and acquisition of equipment (all purchases must be approved by the Station Manager). Responsible for cleaning and organizing all studio and production equipment. Completes weekly cleanings of all equipment including changing and/or cleaning intake dust filters as necessary. Completes monthly deep cleaning of all equipment. Organizes and maintains an inventory of all equipment and gear. Coordinates with KUER engineering staff to make at least two annual trips to the towers at Bald Mesa and Abajo Peak and completes any maintenance required. The Abajo Peak translator is licensed to the University of Utah so any maintenance of that equipment is the responsibility of and must be coordinated with KUER engineering staff. Completes transmitter site maintenance as needed. Assists in installation and maintenance of computer software and hardware. Assists in remote broadcasts, simulcasts, and in‑studio performances as needed. Performs component level equipment repair as needed. Maintains documentation of the studio and transmitter site networks, equipment IP addresses and credentials, and etc. Responsible for training KZMU staff and volunteers on relevant equipment as needed. Completes other duties as agreed upon. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualities: Candidates are encouraged to apply even if they don’t possess all of the knowledge, skills, and qualities listed below. KZMU is looking for candidates who are adaptable, patient, and willing to learn. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Willingness to complete SBE (Society of Broadcast Engineer) courses (KZMU can help support this). Able to creatively solve problems. At least 1 year of experience working in community radio, audio engineering, or related industry. Familiarity with a wide range of equipment and platforms, both analog and digital. Knowledge of FCC and other federal, state, and local broadcasting regulations. Knowledge and understanding of radio communications facilities and distribution systems, including simulcasting. Knowledge of public radio principles, procedures, operations, and standards. Knowledge and experience with Emergency Alert Systems. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications. Possesses IT skills for basic in‑house organization and studio and transmitter site documentation. Knowledge of FTP (file transfer protocol) for programming syndicated and pre‑recorded content, data storage and archiving, and server management.
