Cloud Engineer

The Cloud Engineer will support the configuration and operation of UCSF cloud infrastructure services, partner with developers and stakeholders, and automate maintenance while contributing to monitoring capabilities. Core responsibilities include delivering secure, scalable cloud solutions, building reusable components, ensuring compliance, providing technical guidance to development teams, and supporting disaster recovery and uptime. Key Responsibilities Cloud Engineering Support configuration and operation of UCSF cloud infrastructure, collaborating with developers, engineers, and analysts. Collaborate with vendor partners to deliver cloud services and implement secure, scalable infrastructure. Build and support reusable cloud components, services, and interfaces. Ensure compliance with security controls and perform routine audits. Provide support and technical guidance to teams moving to or using cloud services. Develop and implement disaster recovery plans and procedures for 24×7 reliability. Implement and maintain infrastructure to ensure uptime and redundancy. Problem Solving Work with Platform Services, IS, and IT leadership to identify cost‑effective solutions. Monitor needs and troubleshoot escalated issues from the Customer Experience team. Customer Service Build and maintain relationships with customers, partners, and stakeholders. Apply best practices around user experience and support. Continuous Improvement Keep up to date with laws, regulations, and cloud technologies and share updates. Facilitate innovation and continuous improvement using industry knowledge. Project Planning and Management Contribute to the execution of cloud infrastructure projects, ensuring support, maintenance, and security of existing platforms. Communications and Training Create, update, maintain documentation of server infrastructure, policies, and procedures. Share technical knowledge and support onboarding and training of cloud services. Communicate with stakeholders to support issue resolution and provide updates. Proactively communicate with other departments and central IT units to support UCSF's cloud service needs. Other Promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and UCSF core values. Maintain knowledge of university policy and apply it fairly. Participate in an on‑call rotation for high‑critical incident response. Perform other related responsibilities as requested. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent in computer science, information systems, or a related field. 3+ years of IT, computer science, or engineering experience. Hands‑on experience in platform engineering and cloud services. Knowledge of design, development, and application of technology to meet business needs. Experience migrating on‑premises workloads to AWS, Azure, or GCP, including hybrid and virtualized environments. Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, etc.). Experience applying DevOps practices and infrastructure automation. Knowledge of APIs, Linux/Windows, containerization, and Kubernetes. Experience with cloud‑based automation, provisioning, and IaC (Terraform, Ansible). Strong customer focus: triage, incident response, and root‑cause analysis. Strong communication and collaborative skills. Experience promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Ability to think creatively, work agilely in fast‑paced environments. Required Certifications Associate‑level cloud certification in AWS, Azure, GCP, or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications Experience implementing cloud governance and security controls in regulated environments. Advanced cloud certification (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect – Professional, Azure Solutions Architect Expert).
