Critical Care Transport Nurse

SUMMARY:
Responsible for the advanced management of emergency and critical care patients during ground transportation. This role involves providing intensive care monitoring, critical care interventions, and advanced procedures to individuals of all ages who are critically ill or injured. The scope of practice includes overseeing high-risk obstetrical, medical, surgical, respiratory, and cardiovascular cases. Through specialized training, the Critical Care Transport Nurse will provide interventions including but not limited to advanced airway management, ventilatory support, continuous cardiac/hemodynamic monitoring, cardiac assist devices, performing advanced surgical interventions and diagnostic testing.

- Performs patient care at incident scenes and during transport in accordance with established standards, protocols, and policies under the supervision of the physician medical director (or his/her designee).
- Provides comprehensive, effective, and safe care to any patient requiring transportation.
- Participates in training of emergency care personnel (EMTs, students, first responders, residents, attending physicians, nurses, and others) including curricula development, precepting, mentoring, simulation-based training, conferences, and other training.
- Assists in development of patient care protocols, methods, training curricula, and other research by participating in shared governance committees and other activities. Remain current with literature pertaining to critical care and transportation.
- Attends required staff meetings, educational events, and training sessions.
- Assists in writing presentations and papers for publications based on research performed and may present such findings at conferences.
- Completes patient documentation (written and electronic) per Rhode Island Hospital and The Rhode Island Department of Health: Division of EMS policies.
- This documentation shall be completed in a timely fashion.
- Performs public education, marketing, and outreach. Upholds and adheres to EMS policies and procedures per Rhode Island Hospital and The Rhode Island Department of Health: Division of EMS policies.
- Upholds safety standards as set by Rhode Island Hospital and The Rhode Island Department of Health: Division of EMS policies.
- Maintains a cheerful, positive, professional attitude toward patients, families, co-workers, staff, and the public. Must be prepared for unrestricted travel in not only ambulances, but also cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, trains, and helicopters.
- Maintains a clean operational environment.
- Retrieves, stocks, and cleans medical equipment and supplies.
- Reports to remote location(s) for duty.
- Responds to emergencies, disasters, and major incidents. Meets and maintains clinical and equipment competencies designated by program criteria.
- Performs data entry and clerical assistance. Assists with Emergency Department communications and dispatch at and for the Medical Communications center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island. Baccalaureate in nursing preferred.
Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS and PALS certification required.
Must obtain Trauma certification, and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within one year in position.
Advanced transport specific nursing certification within two years in the position.
Nationally Registered and Rhode Island EMT certification or actively enrolled.
EXPERIENCE:
Three years current full-time nursing experience within an advanced critical care area such as an Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Department is required.
One year of this experience must be an Intensive Care Unit.
In lieu of this experience, employee can have 10 years of active critical care transport experience.
Minimum of 1000 hours of hands-on pediatric patient care is required.
Completion of advanced skills training as determined by department policies and protocols.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Visual and aural ability to monitor patient status.
Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand and walk for long periods and the ability to bend, crouch, and kneel.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs and on occasion the ability to move up to 200 lbs.
Capable of performing in cramped quarters and any type of weather condition or hazardous environments.
Ability to provide care in mobile environment.
Free of motion sickness or history thereof.
Free of physical ailment which may impair consciousness or cognitive ability.
Must possess and maintain physical condition which allows running, climbing, and carrying of medical equipment and lifting of patients.
Ability to use two-way radios, cell phones and other communications devices including carrying of such devices.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within policies and practices and within protocols established by the physician medical director, LifePACT manager(s) and other relevant authorities.
Refers specific complex problems to the medical director and/or LifePACT manager(s) when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures is required.

None.
